iTunes Review

Juliana Hatfield has enjoyed a modest career as a member of the Blake Babies, the Lemonheads and as a solo performer. But while her albums of weightless pop catch the ear, it’s her penchant for self-confession that’s been keeping her relevant these days. She’s written a memoir and shares a blog of personal info and now with 2010’s Peace and Love, she strips down her sound to an acoustic hum that often sounds like little more than acoustic bedroom demos and reveals even more of her inner self. The double-tracked vocals for “Evan” slightly obscure what is surely a note to her longtime friend and leader of the Lemonheads. “What is Wrong,” “I Picked You Up” and “I’m Disappearing” create an intimate mood that never forgets about the art of the song. How much truth there is to these personal sounding anecdotes is secondary to the simple pop joy contained in the extra skip in the step of “Let’s Go Home.” Quite lovely.

What I've been waiting for...

This is the Juliana album I've been waiting for. Great sound and the songwriting is great. Very different than her last one, yet still Juliana. One of her best, in my opinion.

a great album

i want to say almost a return to form even? great melodies, lyrics, instrumentation and vocals. i think easily on my favorite of her albums.

Great, intimate record

I love this record. It reminds me a bit of Beautiful Creature, only a bit more spared-down. Some of my favorite tracks are the title song, Why Can't We Love Each Other, Let's Go Home, and I Picked You Up. I think Juliana's writing has only deepened, matured, and improved over the years. This album and How To Walk Away are, if not her best records, then certainly two of her most accomplished. It's almost all acoustic, so don't expect a noisefest. But if you've liked her last few albums, you'll dig this one as well.

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

After Juliana Hatfield disbanded the jangle pop trio the Blake Babies in 1990, she launched a solo career, performing similarly melodic indie guitar pop. Singing in an endearingly thin voice, Hatfield married her ringing hooks to sweet, lovelorn pop and startlingly honest confessional songs. Her 1992 solo debut, Hey Babe, became a college radio hit, and its follow-up, 1994's Become What You Are, was primed to become a crossover success in the wake of the commercialization of alternative rock.
