A compilation of opposing musical experiences!

Throughout the years, I have listened to many soundtracks, and I must admit, this soundtrack far exceeds any expectations I ever had for it. Though I trusted Christopher Columbus to find at least a decent composer after his soirees into Harry Potter, I did not have much faith in Christophe Beck, never having been a fan of his previous works. However, the intricate stylings of this soundtrack have changed my predisposition entirely. Here are a few quick overview points:

1. I really like the woodwind exposure in the score. Though this technique usually comes off as cliche, with the other strong points of chord structure and balance, the woodwind features act as a very nice transition between musical phrases and exclamations, executed much better than other attempts of recent scores *cough*Carter Burwell of "Twilight"*cough*.

2. As a long-time fan of the books, I was a bit worried about the commercial appeal this movie had been drawing of late and its possible impact upon the tone of the score. However, much to my approval, the score acutely portrays the dark underlay of hopelessness that Riordan writes into the series underneath the wit and satire.

3. Not having seen the movie yet (though I already have my ticket for Friday!), I can already see where the score might demonstrate the relationships between certain characters, and I definitely look for that facet in a score. I love it when the score can tell a story by itself and be a standalone work, and this score definitely has that quality.

Quick comparisons:
This score, at points, eminates high points of the following soundtracks:
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe - Harry Gregson-Williams
Beowulf - Alan Silvestri
X-Men - John Ottman
Inkheart - Javier Navarrete
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - Hans Zimmer

I make this review after only a few hours after purchasing it and listening to it thrice, however, if you are a true fan of the books or just a connoisseur of movie scores, I would definitely recommend it as a must-have for your music library.
