iTunes Review
All hail the 1980s? Well, the UK’s Keane have plugged in their retro synthesizers and written a handful of tunes (“Spiralling,” “The Lovers Are Losing,” “You Haven’t Told Me Anything”) that recall the pure synth-pop bliss of that era with lots of exaggerated productions. Keane keep a tighter grip on the production end, never allowing a reverb to swallow them. Their third album, 2008’s Perfect Symmetry, was recorded in Paris, London, and Berlin, with a variety of producers stopping by for input (Jon Brion, Stuart Price) on this self-produced excursion into a new Keane. This “new” Keane revel in the upbeat propulsion of “Better Than This” that allows singer Tom Chaplin to shriek in mock falsetto and generally play up the festive atmosphere where once brooding might have taken hold. And this all-keyboard band even adds some guitars in spots; they temper the mood a tad. The title track still swoons with a gravitas and a sense of personal mission: “I shake through the wreckage for signs of life.” The closing ballad, “Love is the End,” puts a gripping final nail into love’s endless cycle of hope and defeat.
Customer Reviews
Keane; Retro-Style? Somehow it works...
I must admit that I went into this album with very high expectations, but after hearing the first single "Spiralling", had feelings of doubt; sounds of Keane meets Culture Club. Be forewarned; this is NOT the Keane of old. The album is very, very "pop" sounding and more upliftiing in someways than the previous 2 albums; fusing retro-style synths and Keane's piano driven sound and Tom Chaplin's chilling vocals. For the most part the album follows this path... until you get halfway through. Perfect Symmetry, indeed. It transforms into what we've heard on "Hopes And Fears" and "Under The Iron Sea"; haunting, emotional tracks with flashes of they new retro-synths used on the first half of the album. IMO, this is the weakest of their albums, but by no means is it lacking in style and substance. I appreciate the effort and give major kudos to them in exploring a new sound (especially with Tom's new U2/Killers sound). Don't go into this album expecting "Hopes And Fears" or "Under The Iron Sea". Enter this with an open mind and a very, very optimistic attitude. Cheers :).
Very Dissapointed!!
What happend to the life soundrack that was Hopes and Fears? The progressive Iron Sea? Keane created a sound that belonged to them. Now it seems they have gone the ways of the world and created the new Killers album or Radiohead remix. I am from the US and have turned countless people on to Keane, but, it sounds like new Billy Joel. Tom has a first rate voice with range that is the perfect for the harmonies created with piano based music. Has Tom smoked too many cigarettes? His voice sounds strained and hollow. I am very dissapointed. I have desperately anticipated this release and now have nothing in music to look forward to. Listen to Tom's voice. He is definitaly channelling the Killers with his tone.
Keane can do no wrong
I may be slightly biased because Keane is my favorite band, but this album is amazing! It sounds very much like the Keane we're used to, yet Perfect Symmetry is a unique sound for them and shows just how much they can change and release something truly unique and interesting! So worth the wait P.S. I don't get why some people have complained about the sound being so different from Hopes and Fears or The Iron Sea. Isn't that the point of being an artist? Why would a band release something identical to an old release?
