iTunes Review

At the onset of the 1980s, Rush were poised as one of hard rock’s most successful groups. Their album epics established them as cult favorites with a rapidly expanding cult. Their overtly serious lyrics, written by the group’s drummer Neil Peart, led to obsessive discussion among fans and were a point of derision for critics. But what could not be argued was their larger than life sound — other power trios might be as loud, but none were as complex. Alex Lifeson’s guitar was simply massive, essaying classic guitar riffs soon emulated by aspiring actual and air guitarists everywhere, while Peart’s unrestrained drum fills challenged all rock drummers with their liberal use of unusual time signatures. Permanent Waves features several of the group’s essential tunes. “The Spirit of Radio” has become a classic rock staple with its climactic chorus delivering the necessary catharsis. “Freewill” stands as the band’s self-empowerment anthem (Peart is a diehard Ayn Rand disciple) and the expanded tracks — “Jacob’s Ladder,” “Natural Science” — trip out into extended instrumental passages that are among the most nuanced in rock. Rush managed to be progressive without losing their core appeal.

Customer Reviews

"Invisible airways crackle with life..."

Permanent Waves is an album that doesn't seem to have a whole lot of meat on its bones at first, but something keeps you listening to it. It could be the two well-known tracks "Spirit of Radio" and "Freewill". Or it may be the two instrumentally-driven progressive pieces "Jacob's Ladder" and "Natual Science". Or you could be a "hit-hater" and the two underrated pieces "Entre Nous" and "Different Strings" are what come to your liking. The thing that Rush did on this album that keeps you listening is to not ditch prog rock altogether and alienate long-time fans, while bringing in more condensed, digestable pieces for the lesser mind and the masses. This album is sure to appeal to long-time listeners of this extremely talented band, and Rush newbies alike. While not as many hits are found on this album as their next (and best known) album, "Moving Pictures", this album is just as accessible to newcomers of Rush. Don't hesitate to buy; it's six bucks! If you want bang for you buck, then you've found it! Highly Recommended to classic rock fans and Rush freaks. REPORT CARD: A-

The True Spirit of Radio

The way Rush describes music in this song is still extremely relevant - " All this machinery making modern music can still be openhearted, not so fully charted it's really just a question of your honesty, yeah, your honesty. One likes to believe in the freedom of music, for glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity." That has to be my favorite lyrics ever.
