Album Review
Arguably, not since the days of Jeff Scott Soto has Yngwie Malmsteen shared the spotlight with a singer who possessed enough pizzazz to truly stand toe to toe with the Swedish six-string shredder. But on ol' Yng's 2008 release, Perpetual Flame, former Judas Priest/Iced Earth screecher Ripper Owens has signed on as the man behind the mike. And the result is Yngwie's best album in quite some time. Not only does it feature all the superhuman guitar acrobatics that you've long come to expect from the man who can probably sweep-pick arpeggios in his sleep, but it also features a chap who is known as an absolute vocal terrorizer within the realm of metal. The Yngwie/Ripper union pays immediate dividends for fans of "medieval metal," as evidenced by "Death Dealer" and "Four Horsemen" (perhaps the true test of an Yngwie song is if you can picture yourself dressed in knight's armor, storming a castle — and these two ditties pass the test!). But don't fret, longtime fans, Ripper allows Yngwie more than enough room to shred away, especially on "Red Devil" (which musically sounds surprisingly like a vintage Joe Satriani-esque tune) and the over the top instrumental "Caprici di Diablo." As heard throughout Perpetual Flame, Yngwie has once more (to borrow a quote from the guitarist himself) "unleashed the f**king fury!"

Yngwie & Ripper ROCK!!
I've been a fan of Yngwie's since his Alcatrazz days and Ripper is the best vocalist Yngwie's recorded with solo since Mike Vescera and Jeff Scott Soto. I always enjoyed Yngwie's heavier material. I wasn't a big fan of his whimpy collaboration with Joe Lynn Turner. And now he's got the singer who can belt out the great older material as well as, I'm hoping, most of this album when he plays live. How about Ripper singing 'Hiroshima mon Amour', 'As Above, So Below' or 'Disciples of Hell'? Looking forward to seeing Yngwie live on this tour!! Concert Review: It seemed like half the Agora crowd (10/18/08) were related to singer Tim "Ripper" Owens, who grew up about an hour south, in Canton, OH. For nearly two hours, the musical homecoming was punctuated by solos from the Swedish guitarist. He was afforded almost two-thirds of a stage stacked with a dozen Marshall cabinets (each topped with three heads), as Owens, the drummer, bassist and keyboardist were squeezed into the remaining space. 'Demon Driver' and 'Damnation Game' were up early, the latter featured Malmsteen playing guitar horizontally, vertically above his head and with his mouth. Four songs in before the first solo highlight. Like much of the set, it included copious amounts of theatrical, dry-ice fog. During the showcase, Malmsteen took more stances than the Olympic biathlon, ending the instrumental section with snippets of the 'Star Spangled Banner'. Owens playfully chided those seated at tables in the back of the club, asking if they were, "at a dinner theater, waiting for the shrimp cocktail." Later, he good-naturedly acknowledged his returning home. "I know I'm back in the USA, people drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon. I thought they got rid of that after my grandpa stopped drinking it!" An acoustic guitar mounted on a pole was placed center stage, as the band left, allowing the virtuoso to demonstrate a different style, his trusty cream colored Strat still slung over his shoulder. The interlude segued into 'Dreaming (Tell Me)', which morphed into Rainbow's 'Gates Of Babylon'. Later, another solo led into 'I Am A Viking', followed by another newbie, 'Red Devil', an ode to the guitarist's love of Ferrari (the sports car logo is emblazoned on the back of his guitar). It also refers to the red six-string utilized solely for said tune. Despite the lengthy amount of time off stage, it wasn't until an hour and forty minutes into the set that Owens shed his leather jacket. 'You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget' was return to old school anthems, a long time in coming. The encore saw the return of the acoustic guitar, Ripper then in biker vest for 'I See The Light Tonight'. Surprisingly, no 'Rising Force' in the set. And also $25 for a copy of the new Perpetual Flame CD (unsigned) is ridiculous!
A serious upgrade to Yngwie's sound
Besides new music, the biggest thing to get excited about here is the addition of Roy Z as producer, the guitarist/producer involved with Bruce Dickinson's massively good CHEMICAL WEDDING. The moment I heard he was involved with Perpetual Flame, I knew the sound/mix issues that have plagued Yngwie of late wouldn't be a problem. And I was right -- the mix here is full, robust yet clear and cutting. Anyone worried about another muddy record needn't worry. Kudos to Yngwie for bringing Roy Z on board and letting him do his thing. I'm not going to coment on the lyrics, because we all know what we're getting with Yngwie. But the melodies and riffs seem much refreshed, as though Ripper Owens has ignited a spark for Yngwie. What I hear is a renewed commitment to the music again, after several albums spent backsliding and becoming too repetitious for many long time fans like myself. I hear echoes of Yngwie's early albums, which brings a smile to my face. Owens shines here as well -- handling the material without any issues whatsoever. He'll certainly be able to reproduce the entire catalog on the road. I was however, looking forward to hearing his voice at it's most unique along with Yngwie, and it seems as though he's modulated it to "fit" just slightly. Whether that's his decision or Yngwie's influence who knows. It is a good marriage, don't get me wrong. HIghly reccommended, especially if you've been down on Yngwie of late. This will renew your appreciation of the Fiery Swede. Beware the album art, however -- Still the biggest of Yngwie's Achilles Heels, this is one super awful cover photo.
WOW!
Yngwie is still amazing after all of these years! His albums rarely disappoint. He is incredible live. Check out his new tour and album. OMG!
