iTunes Review

Panda Bear is Noah Lennox, one of the founders of New York’s Animal Collective, and his amazing ear for magical — and somehow immediately memorable — melodies is a big part of Animal Collective’s success. Here on Person Pitch, Lennox makes music that is delicate and hypnotic; his songs feel like aural kaleidoscope snowflakes, and his lovely, reverb-wrapped falsetto is vibrant and moving. (Note to Beach Boys haters: Lennox’ vocal style and the endless layers of reverb here may not thrill you if Brian Wilson never did!) Person Pitch has much to offer, and digging in at any point is rewarding. Having epic, diverse songs like “Bros” and “Good Girl/Carrots,” woven in with shorter bursts of stellar pop brightness like the huge-sounding “Comfy In Nautica” (which utterly transports the listener by the end of the song) and the mysterious “Take Pills,” with its clattering, mechanical percussion and ghostly, hovering vocals, makes for an exceptionally involving and transformative listening experience.

When will I stop drooling?

You probably won't like it. Your taste levels may just not be high enough, or maybe you're just not as cool as I am. Don't download it, it's not for you, you won't be able to handle it! Each time I listen to this album I find 17 (yes, 17) new things to love. Bro's, for example, is rapidly approaching one of my all time favorite songs. (There is a live version out there that is worth tracking down.) It's a non stop ride through an auditory rain jungle, vibrant, wild, untamed, and little scary. F***ing FUN! It's one of those songs that winds it's way onto playlist after playlist and repeated often. I suggest jumping on a trampoline or running around on a beach while you listen to it. If I could have Panda Bear's children I would. We would live in a treehouse and fingerpaint on Wednesdays.

Best of 2007?

Regardless of if you are an AC fan or not, there is no denying that this is a ground breaking album. Noah Lennox intricately layers samples, loops, and textures all to create a auditory journey drenched in Brian Wilsonesque reverb. This album isn't the most accessible nor does it pretend to be. It may take several listens to fully appreciate but "getting it" is well worth it. Bros is undoubtably the album's centerpiece, but Comfy In Nautica and Good Girl / Carrots also showcase Lennox's genius at work. I consider this to be the best of 2007. Buy this, put on some decent headphones, lay back, and open your mind.

A journey through life

This album reminds me of pre-school and retirement homes at the same time. The fragility of people combined with their determined spirit. A mountaintop dojo for atheist monks. A road trip in a flying car. Rain on a sunny day. Lots of abstract ideas that make little sense, but at the same time, make all the sense of the world. I promise that some day, this album will be playing in your head when you wake up at 4 in the morning to use the bathroom. It's really like the aural interpretation of your stream of conciousness, mixed in with the universal truths that you find only while in the illogical world of dreams. Is this review a bunch of B.S.? Listen to the album and find out for yourself.
