iTunes Review

Now regularly hailed as the greatest album of the rock era, Brian Wilson's 1966 masterpiece would prove to be as much troubling personal millstone as transcendent musical touchstone. While "God Only Knows," Wouldn't It Be Nice," and "Sloop John B" would become evergreens in his band's repertoire for decades, they weren't enough to push the album past #10 on the bestseller charts -- which, to put the band's overarching success in the mid-60's in perspective, was considered a bitter disappointment in its day. This album's resiliency has defied most efforts to musically deconstruct it, which is as it should be; Wilson himself opined that it was an album to be "felt" as much as listened to. That nakedly spiritual appeal has crossed generations, embraced by a growing, fervent following that cherish it for what it is: a window into the fragile and wistful soul of Brian Wilson -- and the hopeless, wounded romantic in us all.

Ahead of its time . . . and a personal statement

by rrbrinker2

There are two things that come to mind when I listen to Pet Sounds: 1) it gets better with repeat listens (a common theme in these reviews), and 2) it was ahead of its time. The subject of the album, really a song cycle, is the emotional life of a young man passing into adulthood, and maybe becoming disallusioned by what he finds. What amazes me is how Brian Wilson supported these feelings with his musical production. It's like he is using musical sounds as an artist would use color and texture on a canvas. The result is an album in which you hear new things and new depth every time you listen.

In addition to the stupendous instrumental arrangements and production, Wilson also creates a true feeling of space, especially with the Beach Boys vocal arrangements (example, the circular swirling arrangement at the end of God Only Knows.) And Wilson may be known for that wonderful falsetto, but I haven't heard any other album make better use of the baseline. The result is an album with a distinctive overall sound, but with a tremendous diveristy of sounds, and feelings.

I love this album! (In this format, I do prefer the stereo mixes, but both are great.)

Awesome

Pet Sounds is an amazing album. Wouldn't It Be Nice, I'm Waiting For The Day, Sloop John B., God Only Knows, I Know There's An Answer, and Here Today are all great songs, along with the rest. I'm Waiting For The Day is one of the best songs of all time. Both the mono and stereo versions sound great.

The best of Brian for sure...

No doubt the best from Brian...lyrics are personal but stunted..music is wonderful and vocals are perfection. I prefer Beatles lyrics and songs to Brians...but love this nontheless. Brian put everything he was into his songs..
