Album Review

Like many mid-'90s alternative rock bands, Santa Barbara's Dishwalla are probably doomed to one-hit wonder status, despite the quality songwriting pervading 1995's Pet Your Friends. The album sat in record stores collecting dust for over a year before its third single, "Counting Blue Cars" (best known for its lyric "Tell me all your thoughts on God/'Cause I really want to meet her"), became a number one smash on rock and alternative radio. The album contains a set of well-crafted songs (notably "Haze" and "Give") with rich guitar textures, complemented by vocalist J.R. Richards' silky vibrato. "Charlie Brown's Parents" is another fine song that became a live favorite, though it failed to repeat the previous single's sales success.

Pigeon-Holed by Counting Blue Cars

So it takes a break-thru hit to get a band on the radar and then we hope they get the chance to show their true colors... not always the case (Extreme with More Than Words). I think that, to a lesser extent was the case for Dishwalla. I was on the Counting Blue Cars bandwagon and it wasn't until a buddy of mine more or less shoved them down my throat that I woke up and smelled the coffee. This album was deserving of much more than "that" song. Every song is perfect. You can't not like J.R. Richards (hope I got that right) voice. They had a distinct sound during that time period. The programming and keys gave Dishwalla and Pet Your Friends that extra something. This band was and continues to be great. If you want to get your feet wet with this album, buy "Moisture" and I will guarantee you will be hooked. Enjoy!

Way Underrated Band!!!

***** This is by far one of my favorite albums that I can listen to over and over and over again. Absolutely postively beautifully written songs backed by a classic vocalist (argubly one of the best of current time) and a band that makes you feel his emotions. Quite the album. If you don't have it already, you SHOULD buy it. *****

Fantastic album!

I never tire of any of the tunes on this beautiful album. Counting Blue Cars probably got too much airplay for me, but I don't live in the States, so that really didn't effect me. Charlie Brown's Parents, Miss Emma Peel, jeez, I could go on all night talking about this beaut. Classic alternative music at it's best!

The Santa Barbara, CA, band Dishwalla made a big splash in 1996 with their catchy pop single "Counting Blue Cars." With the gritty heart and soul of those who came before them, Dishwalla's hard rock sound was enough for fans to make "Counting Blue Cars" one of the most-requested songs of that year. The...
