Brilliant, but slightly less so...

With his solo career successfully launched, Peter decided next to work with the man whose very name was synonymous with progressive rock: Robert Fripp (the King Crimson leader had been dying to work with Gabriel for years). The choice was inspired, but unfortunately for Fripp, Peter Gabriel "Scratch" is surrounded by two albums that are simply timeless (1977's "Car" and 1980's "Melt"). But that doesn't stop "Scratch" from being a great album filled with classic songs.

With the help of Fripp "Scratch" has far more of a cohesive sound than the scattered, mulitfaceted "Car". But unfortunately, it was far less cohesive in terms of song quality. Several songs ("A Wonderful Day...", "Exposure", "F&J") seem like complete filler, something that the great Gabriel should never have. But other than those songs, the rest of the album simply rock, whhether in terms of the in your face rock of "On The Air", "DIY", "Animal Magic", and "Perspective", or the quiet, epic granduer of "White Shadow" and "Home Sweet Home". Gabriel and Fripp even manage to slip in two ballads, the guitar-based "Mother Of Violence" and the piano-based "Indigo". Both give the album more flavor, and help to give the listener respite from the intense rock on the rest of the work.

Peter Gabriel's "Scratch" album is the last he released before his increased flirtations with world music, which, by the end of the 80's, almost completely dominated his music style. So, for those of you still wanting a little hint of Genesis with your Gabriel, try out "Scratch". You just might find what you're looking for.

Listening Is Required...

This seems like a Gabriel Genesis album to me. Listening is required...there are no immediate pop songs available as you may hear on 3 or SO, but each time I listen to "Scratch" I hear something new...probably has something to do with Robert Fripp's influence. "DIY", "Perspective" and "One-Way World" are the short energetic listens here, but "On the Air," "Mother of Violence", "White Shadow" and "Exposure" remind me Gabriel's "Lamb" Genesis days. Hits? No. Progressive rock complexity? Certainly.

Not as strong

The weakest of Peter Gabriel's eponymous albums..."Flotsam and Jetsam" and "Home Sweet Home" are interesting. Other than that, it is mortal.

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

As the leader of Genesis in the early '70s, Peter Gabriel helped move progressive rock to new levels of theatricality. He was no less ambitious as a solo artist, but he was more subtle in his methods. With his first eponymous solo album in 1977, he began exploring darker, more cerebral territory, incorporating avant-garde, electronic, and worldbeat influences into his music. The record, as well as its two similarly titled successors, established Gabriel as a critically acclaimed cult artist, and...
