Album Review
Originally slated for release in 2004, theatrical goth/glam/punk/alternative rock collective Deadsy third collection of retro-eyeliner anthems is as strangely likeable as it is manipulative and redundant. Phantasmagore wants to be the best Ministry/Sisters of Mercy/T. Rex/metalcore Bauhaus reunion album ever made. Frontman Exeter, who sounds like a cross between Alice in Chains' Layne Staley and Social Distortion captain Mike Ness, lets himself morph in and out of vocal affectations like a C-list Mike Patton, painting "Carrying Over"'s "glammy" pre-chorus with echoes of Ziggy-era Bowie before launching it into a full-on Andrew W.K.-style arena rocker. The band draws a whole lot of comparisons to Gary Numan, and the "Cars" synth-patch that gets peppered throughout Phantasmagore's 11 cuts doesn't help, but for every misstep (the world does not need another big modern rock version of the Rolling Stones "Paint It Black") there's the a piercing ray of campy fun that shines through all of the forced doom and gloom ("Razor Love," "Book of Black Dreams," "Health & Theory") like the mischievous flash of a grin beneath Marc Bolan's top hat.
Customer Reviews
DEADSY sheds nu metal skin ....
....and reinvent the true goth sound. With a ear in Ziggy Stardust and swirling snarl guitar of Smashing Pumpkins, they maintain thier own signature sound and bury the wanna-bees wishes of another highschool angst throw away disc. I will dare call this as important to the future of goth or rock, as Led Zepplin was to rock or Joy Division was to goth. If you like Rammstein, Placebo,Bahaus, Cure, or Depeche Mode give this a listen; if you like nu metal/or that fakey crybaby hardcore crap, get out of your mothers basement and get a job.
a great masterpiece artistically and musically
Deadsy has changed quite a bit *being a fan for four years now* but they've eased up on the heavy synth use and have focused more on the other instruments. Phantasmagore features some beautiful clean guitar work and not to mention the bass can actually be heard, and the intellgent use of the acoustic in Carrying Over and The Last Story Ever adds a different edge to this wonderful group. I suggest giving the album more than 1 listen. It's harder for older fans to adapt to, but after awhile, you get hooked. It's well worth the $10.
Deadsy are on top of their game
Phantasmagore is pure Deadsy through and through, a great follow-up to the last album. There are no slow spots such as "Cruella" and "Flowing Glower", both great songs, but oddly placed within the flow of "Commencement". "Paint it Black" is much more lively than the last cover, "Tom Sawyer" and the general tempo of this album is more cohesive and moving than the last. "The Last Story Ever" is the new "Brand New Love" and features inventive lyrics and vocoding, worth a few good listens in a row. To sum it up: these songs are flawlessly constructed and recorded. If you enjoyed the last one this album is sure to please.
