Album Review

"Physical" became such a monster hit — not just a hit, but a pop-culture phenomenon that was impossible to escape — that it became difficult to view its accompanying album as anything other than a conduit for the single. The thing was, Physical was a damn good record, in many ways one of Olivia Newton-John's very best. Picking up where Totally Hot and Xanadu left off, Physical skillfully balances catchy yet mellow dance cuts with immaculately crafted adult contemporary pop and ballads. The title track, of course, is the best example of the dance side, but "Landslide," "Make a Move on Me," and "Promise (Dolphin Song)" illustrate that Physical wasn't a one-hit record at all — if anything, they hold up better than the big hit. There is some filler here — none of her records were free from that curse — but it's well-made filler and helps make Physical one of the most enjoyable albums of her career.

Olivia Neutron-Bomb!

What a pop album for its time!! She was a trend-setter back in the day - the headbands!! Let's face it, if you had this album back in 1981, you were hanging onto the #1 single to stay at the top of the charts for 10 weeks - PHYSICAL.... Hard to believe, but she worked it out!!! She is still as gorgeous as ever and her voice still as pure as the white driven snow!!!

Cold winds rarely blow, here at the end of the rainbow. And what did I find at the end of said rainbow? GOLD! This whole album is pure magic and one of the seminal albums of my tween years.

I still love Olivia!

I was 14 years old when this album was released and I had already been an ONJ fan for years, even before Grease. I had the soundtracks for Grease and Xanadu as well as Totally Hot and Physical (all on LP). Side two of Physical stayed on my turntable that whole year and Olivia sang me to sleep every night. I loved Silvery Rain and The Promise. It's amazing that this beautiful Aussie with the voice of an angel had the power to make a 14 year old boy contemplate conservation. Of course, it didn't hurt that I had a HUGE crush on her (and still do). I remember she even did an HBO concert a couple years later that I recorded on cassette and listened to over and over in my car. Wow, flashback!

Olivia Newton-John skillfully made the transition from popular country-pop singer to popular mainstream soft rock singer, becoming one of the most successful vocalists of the '70s in the process. The transition itself wasn't much of a stretch — her early-'70s hits "I Honestly Love You" and "Have...
