Album Review

Huey Lewis and the News sound considerably more focused on their second album, Picture This. By incorporating stronger elements of R&B and doo wop (their cover of "Buzz Buzz Buzz" is first-rate) and embracing pop to a much greater extent, the News find their own distinctive sound — clean-cut, steady middle-class rock & roll. They still suffer from uneven material, but "Do You Believe in Love" is a stunner, a tight set of polished, anthemic hooks that is one of the best mainstream pop singles of the early '80s.

I think their early work was a little too...

...new wave for my taste. But when "Sports" came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically.

Gotta get back in time...

True, this album is the start of "that Huey Lewis and the News sound". There's some good songs here, like "Workin' for a Livin'", "Do You Believe In Love" "Whatever Happened to True Love" and "The Only One". But, if you want the best of The News, pick up Sports, Greatest Hits, and the soundtrack for Back to the Future.

The Start of the News Trilogy

This album is the prelude to Sports. It is full of catchy tunes that are influenced by old school R&B and old rock n' roll standards, as well as that signiture Huey sound. Buy this along with Sports and Fore! and you won't regret it.
