After The Number of the Beast's artistic and commercial success, Iron Maiden was at a crossroad. New singer Bruce Dickinson had taken a commanding lead within the group, while the twin guitars of Dave Murray and Adrian Smith had become the gold standard for metal guitarists everywhere. However, with greater commercial potential looming if only it could land a perfect hit single, the group had to determine its direction. Its decision to ignore commercial pressures and issue an album that would be most appreciated by its loyal, hardcore following solidified its reputation as heavy metal’s most honorable and committed ensemble. Chief songwriter and bassist Steve Harris contributes definitive Maiden fare such as “Where Eagles Dare,” “The Trooper," and “Still Life.” However, in a strong sign of band unity, Dickinson and Smith offer the equally powerful “Revelations,” “Flight of Icarus," and “Die with Your Boots On,” tracks that seamlessly fit the core Maiden sound.
