Excellent

This is one of my favorite albums of the year.

Self-described "Friend Rock" is marvelous, jaunty indie pop

"Piecemeal" is the clever, utterly charming debut release from Like Pioneers, the band that took Chicago indie rock bands Bound Stems and The Narrator and found a new fit for their talents. Driven by lead singer Bobby Gallivan's evocative lyrics and backed by stellar musicianship and artful production choices, the result is a triumphant, penetratingly joyful album.

May I say "joyful" another dozen times? Not in any saccharine sense: "Piecemeal" is, at times, an album of fingers-crossed and slow, hopeful smiles, an album that sees good things around the corner. And, at other moments, "Piecemeal" is full-out exuberant, dance-in-your-chair fun; if you're not wiggling with glee at tracks like "Gift From a Holiday" and "Crop Circles," check your pulse, friend. The astute listener might catch the contrast that sometimes surfaces between the introspective lyrics, steeped in intertwined "historical" and personal history, compared to the generally playful, optimistic tone of the music. This contrast makes the album more interesting on each repeat listen--there's always some detail you didn't hear last time.

I approached this album as a fan of the now-defunct Bound Stems; I feared that I would be disappointed in the Like Pioneers incarnation. My fears were wholly unfounded: "Piecemeal" is fantastic, and wholly worth having.

Awesome

I got into this band because Dan Radzicki (bass/keys) is my cousin's boyfriend. They are really good and I'm glad I looked them up.
