Album Review

Five years on from 2003's Burn Your Scripts Boys, one-man-band Nathan Burke has left his day job with the post-hardcore act Frodus and moved cross-country from Washington D.C. to Seattle. As one might expect from all those changes, Pierce the Empire with a Sound is a rather sweeping change of direction from Burke's debut as the Out Circuit. Where that album had been a fairly standard issue emo release tempered by a certain level of Radiohead-like sonic experimentation, Pierce the Empire with a Sound is a dark, chilly electronic album filled with low-key, moody pop songs that occasionally get interrupted by bits of shouty post-hardcore angst. The opening "Come out Shooting" features the best balance of the two sides of the Out Circuit, putting a hoarse screamo vocal against a fluid, bass-driven electronic dance track. Tunes like the lyrical indie electronica of "Across the Light" and "Scarlet," as well as the almost Pink Floyd-like blissout "The Hexagon" are more typical, although the generally mellow and spacy sound is interrupted twice towards the album's center, with "The Contender" and "The Fall of Las Vegas," by-the-book pieces of post-hardcore angst with guest lead vocal appearances by Dustin Kensrue of Thrice and Sean Ingram of Coalesce, respectively. The fact that Burke barely even tries to combine the two sides of the Out Circuit's musical personality after the opening track perhaps suggests that he's less committed to the post-hardcore side of his music than he might be; assuming that five years don't pass before the next album, it seems likely that the dark but appealing electronics will predominate even further.

Out Circuit's Best Album Yet

For a band that already boasts an impressive catalouge of beautifully produced, well-crafted electronic records, it was tough to think they could one-up themselves. Alas, they have on this new record. With members of The Epochs & Thrice contributing, this is an album that will continue to grow on you. Its layered arrangements are pure ear candy, but the songs themselves are what keeps you coming back. And the more you listen, the more it clicks. This is an example of a record that gives back to you what you put into it. Highly recomended.

Yes!

I liked it! I had some serious range...slow to fast to hard and back again. I would definitely recommend this album especially since it has such an honest sound.

A Must Own

Nathan Burk (of Frodus fame) is my new hero. With his project The Out_Circuit, he has continued to push the envelope on post-punk and experimental music. The Out_Circuit’s sophomore release, Pierce the Empire With a Sound is a masterpiece that combines beauty with aggression and is the first album of 2008 to really stand out above everything else. Pierce the Empire With a Sound is not a conventional album, and pretty much requires you to listen all the way through and enjoy this album as a whole. In today’s download culture, we’re getting re-wired to only focus on the songs we like and The Album takes on a secondary role to The Single. The Out_Circuit won’t make sense to you as just A Single. There is too much going on for you to only enjoy one song. One minute Nathan’s vocals are full of post-punk/hardcore aggression, only to turn on a dime to a hushed and relaxed vocal. The Out_Circuit’s combination of full band portions of songs to strictly electronic and ambient sounds is something you need to hear, I can’t do it justice by describing it. Another aspect I enjoy about Pierce the Empire With a Sound, is the guests Nathan collaborates with. Collaborations with Dustin Kensrue of Thrice, Sean Ingram of Coalesce, Rachel Burke of Beauty Pill, as well as members of Roadside Monument, The Epochs, Haram, make this album a diverse and satisfying listen. The Out_Circuit’s Pierce the Empire With a Sound is the first great masterpiece of 2008. Groundbreaking and non-conforming to any set genre, it will be something we all will be enjoying and talking about for a long time. Stand Out Tracks: “Come Out Shooting” “The Contender” “Across the Light”
