You Will Not Be Disappointed
While his prior recordings hinted at something amazing, "Pillbug", the fourth album from Giving the Table a Name exceeds high expectations.
From the smoky, percussive swing of "Snowpack", to the twinkling timbre of "Vena Cava", "Pillbug" draws you into a sea of shimmering sounds and billowing beats, as it cleverly changes its structure.
The transcendent track, "A Tide", is a standout with its opalescent swirling guitar riffs and curious whispery lyrics...
"Don't look up/Don't look down/Only straight into the tide..."
Perhaps the album itself is a tide...
While each song ebbed and flowed through the air, I felt as though something wonderful had washed over me, leaving me hypnotized with a slight chill to my skin.
You will not be disappointed.
Quite Unique and Great!
The overall effect is very deep, dark, and brooding musical numbers backed by strong instrumentals and airy vocals. The guitar is very polished, shrouding the album in atmospheric ambience.
My first reaction to Pillbug is that there is a fixed sound through every song. They could have let loose a little more, like in "Pob". But after repeated listens, its pretty clear that the band is at its best when they get really dreamy.
Szwast's music, while undeniably inviting, is also hauntingly hard to hold on to.
