Pineapple - EP

The Downtown Fiction’s 2011 Pineapple EP opens with “Out in the Streets” and closes with “Circles.” Fans of The Who may note some déjà vu—since the 1965 Who album My Generation is bookended by songs with the same titles–but these aren't cover songs, just curious coincidences. Following the departure of drummer Eric Jones and the addition of guitarist Wes Diamond, the band’s penchant for sticky-sweet emo pop has noticeably matured into dynamically crafted indie rock. “Out in the Streets” pulses with rumbling rhythms before blossoming into an explosive chorus where Cameron Leahy sounds more comfortable than ever. His voice has an intimate presence in “Get It Right.” Over vintage Wurlitzer tones and minimal drum machine accompaniment, Leahy contrasts sunny melodies with lovelorn lyrics that spread the blame evenly between both parties in a toxic relationship. “Happy (Without You)” similarly juxtaposes upbeat power pop with breakup lyrics. With poetic lyrics and clever song hooks, “Feeling Better” reveals top-shelf tunesmith talent.
