Upon its initial release in 1996, Pinkerton was considered to be a disappointing follow-up to Weezer’s power-pop charged debut album. As time hurries on, Pinkerton has taken on the legend of being a classic album integral to the “emo” movement. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. But Rivers Cuomo does lead the band into some deeply personal and dark corners. “Tired of Sex” kicks things off with guitars that sound like they have a score to settle. “Getchoo” grinds with an anger that surpasses grunge’s indifference. “Across the Sea” is one of several love songs to Cuomo’s Japanese girlfriend. That and “Falling for You,” not so coincidentally, also represent the most accessible tunes on the album. “Pink Triangle” makes a case for those who are asked to don’t ask and don’t tell. “El Scorcho” winds along with a touch of Pavement in its piece-meal arrangement. The “Deluxe Edition” includes several notable bonus cuts, including a radio remix of “The Good Life,” live and acoustic versions of tunes and early tracking versions that show what it must have been like in the recording studio making this album.

Step Away From The Buy Button

It's about time! The original Pinkerton was a masterpiece, so may Weezer fans couldn't accept the return to a poppier sound with lesser lyrics in the later albums. On just about every release after 1996, you can find a comment from someone who wanted to see the old Weezer again. Well this is Weezer's gift to all of us. 36 tracks! Sure, its full of live tracks and alternative takes. If thats not what you were looking for, dont be turned away. Those tracks fill the album with memories of the times when Weezer was "good." This might be the last we see of the '90s Weezer. But why if you really want to remember those days, why are you on iTunes? Go buy the actual deluxe edition in a music store. It's worth every penny.

Oh snap

I wasn't sure whether I was going to buy this until I saw "I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams" was on here. That makes it worth the money alone. "You Gave Your Love to Me Softly" also makes this a must-have. Like any true Weezer fan, I totally hate them and wasn't sure whether I wanted to give them more money. Here's your $16.99, to show my unwavering love.

Most treasured

If you somehow don't buy the whole thing Longtime Sunshine, Getting up and Leaving, and Tragic Girl are the three must-haves of this collection. These songs are fantastic and in my opinion Longtime Sunshine and Tragic Girl shed a lot of light on Cuomo - where he is right now in life and as a musician.
