You really have to see it
to appreciate the whole experience. There is all sorts of activity going on while these numbers are being sung, and much of it pretty athletic. I suspect auditions focused primarily on dancing ability for much of the cast. Fosse's more interested in the impact and drama of the production, rather than radio play or record sales. If you get a chance to rent it, I highly recommend it.
P.S.
Selling this by mentioning Wicked is like selling War of the Worlds by mentioning Schindler's List. Pippin has more heart than Wicked, but this recording is nowhere near on par. Now, Norbert Leo Butz as Pippin and Idina Menzel as Catherine, THAT I could get into.
Good music, but not a very good cast recording
As much as I love the music to this show (and it is good stuff - see it if you have the chance), the original cast recording is occaisionally just bad. I know the songs and love them, but it's hard to listen to very often. I wish there were another recording of the show somewhere.
