On Stranger Tides
What a fantastic fourth installment to the already spectacular 'Pirates Soundtracks. I love the vibrant accents of Rodrigo y Gabriela. They really provide a great feel and aura throughout the tracks. This soundtrack not only includes a medley of all the popular themes we know and love from the franchise, but also attains a completely fresh, new and exciting feel. Well done Hans Zimmer! I am one happy customer!
Disappointing.
The overall sound is fine. But if you are looking for any new tunes to find your self humming from the last 3 movies you will be disappointed. It's the same songs as pirates 3, just with an acoustic guitar instead of a full symphony. I love Hans, but I wonder if he even tried on this one.
A Slight Change in Course, But Still Reaches the Same Destination
Hans Zimmer, in a move to be commended, has been trying to not fall back on the typical swashbuckling-style action music that he had become known for in the first three Pirates movies on his more recent works, and has put a new unique spin on soundtracks for films like Inception, Rango, and even with the Joker's theme in The Dark Knight. And with his return to the Pirates franchise once more, Zimmer teams up with Flamenco artists Rodrigo y Gabriela, to give a familiar name a new sound, while still making it no less refreshing than the first three Pirates soundtracks. So the only way that this soundtrack can be fairly judged is to review it in three different categories, the songs that are either just Zimmer or mostly Zimmer, the songs that are just Rodrigo y Gabriela, and the remixes at the end of the soundtrack.
-Zimmer songs:
The Pirates of the Caribbean movies have absolutely some of the best scores of all time, and the works by Zimmer here are no exception. The soundtrack opens with a sense of familiarity in "Guilty of Being Innocent of Being Jack Sparrow" which brings to mind many of the Jack Sparrow themes from the first movie. Another major highlight is "Mutiny", which is ridden with the themes and cues of the skeleton pirates from the first movie, which is a very nice touch. But the two new themes Zimmer has created, "Mermaids" and "Blackbeard", are absolute must-buys. "Mermaids" is, thankfully, a good eight minutes long, beginning with a very haunting choir singing a major theme from the third film, and ending with a slightly-modified version of Lord Beckett's death from the third movie. It's a wonderful listen, and possibly the best on the soundtrack. And then there's "Blackbeard", which starts slow, but then goes completely insane, with a theme that's heard frequently throughout the rest of the score. It's a madcap romp, and an absolute pleasure to listen to, much like the rest of the Zimmer songs.
-Rodrigo y Gabriela songs:
Now when I heard that the new Pirates soundtrack would have this new Spanish flair about it, I was a little skeptical about such a deviation from the norm. Then the first song, "Angelica", was released online and I immediately loved it, and if you have to choose one Rodrigo y Gabriela song to by, that should definitely be it. The others, most notably "The Pirate that Should Not Be", are slowly starting to grow on me, but overall are just not my cup of tea.
-The Remixes:
Speaking of not my cup of tea, there are seven remixed songs this time around, similar to the remixed "He's A Pirate" at the end of the Dead Man's Chest soundtrack. Mind you, these aren't nearly as bad and I can understand that they may have a certain audience, I would still avoid purchasing them.
In conclusion, while the "On Stranger Tides" soundtrack is definitely a small step below it's legendary predecessors, it's by no means a bad soundtrack, and puts a unique twist on great, timeless musical fun. Definitely purchase all Zimmer songs if nothing else.
