iTunes Review
Alesana’s fourth studio album opens dramatically with “The Dark Wood of Error,” where spare piano notes, cultish chants, and Latin incantations come together. “The Forbidden Dance” follows the intro with dangerously catchy emo rock, where distorted guitars intertwine with an amazingly arranged horn section. This recording finds Dennis Lee’s clean inflections taking a more prominent role than the scream/singing that shared the spotlight on previous albums. A Place Where the Sun Is Silent also puts cranked guitars on the back burner to successfully implement tastefully arranged string sections and piano parts. “A Gilded Masquerade” is an exquisite standout ballad that contrasts themes of light and darkness, where heavenly harmonies and lush orchestration rub against the grain of guitar distortion and demonic-sounding vocal shredding.
Customer Reviews
Fantastic! An absolute masterpiece!
I've heard a lot of people complaining about Dennis not having as big a part vocally on this album, but you can't forget that he and Shawn write the lyrics together, so it's not as though he was simply pushed aside—he had a say in how much screaming he did. With that said, this is probably the most spectacular album Alesana has put out to date. The amount of work they've put into this record and is remarkable and it really shows. Sure, they went a bit softer on this one, but it's still extremely catchy and heavy in the right places. The duets and the harmonies between Shawn and his sister are fantastic and quite haunting at times, especially with Dennis' screams in the back and foreground and the continued incorporation of the violins and the addition of the trumpets and other horns makes for an incredible sound. The piano also plays a more prominent role than in past albums and I feel it's something that works very well. After listening to the album several times over, it's clear they've put a lot of emphasis on the guitars as well. The story that comes with the album is unique, dark, and overall a pleasure to read. It's a departure from 'The Emptiness' but the the last song on the album really throws you for one hell of a loop (listen and you'll see what I mean). The Italian spoken word parts are also something new and very appropriate given the story was inspired by "The Inferno" from Dante's "The Divine Comedy." Overall, another great piece of work by the boys from Alesana and it's this type of creativity and drive that will keep them at the top of the Post-Hardcore scene for years. If you want an album that's not just recycled breakdowns and cheesy synth parts, give this a listen. This album is worth every penny.
Different, but still amazing
I know people will say they have changed or ask where is Dennis on this album, but trust me take a listen and it really is amazing. Sure the second half of the album is better than the first but overall this album satisfies all I want from Alesan. The instruments sound amazing, Shawn's voice is as amazing as always. Even the small parts that Dennis has are great and well timed. I hope this band stays together for years to come and keeps making great music.
Yay
Alesana is back!! Shawn's voice is still heavenly.
