Dillinger KILLS Timberlake
First of all, if you haven't heard of The Dillinger Escape Plan, climb out from underneath that rock you live under, and use it to bludgeon yourself. Then, buy Calculating Infinity, and Miss Machine. This EP is a nice little treat for fans of the band, but not really a good starting point for people just getting into them. As far as the covers go, these four tracks really show Greg Puciato’s vocal range and all around talent as well as the bands ability to perform across the board. The song selection is superb, picking personal favorite Nine Inch Nails and Massive Attack songs, and a surprisingly accurate Chris Cornell impression on “Jesus Christ Pose”. The EP’s highlight is a version on Justin Timberlake’s “Like I Love You”, with Greg showing his boy band skills. The only thing I really didn’t like was the live version of “The Perfect Design” which came out a bit distorted. All in all, it is a good itunes exclusive, from an amazing band to watch out for on tour this summer.
Really, what is the point of this?
DEP has been one of my favorite bands since Under the Running Board came out, I have seen them play house shows and packed headliner clubs, and love 99% of their songs. Until this. I just don't see what the point is in covering well known songs, note-for-note. These songs (Jesus Christ Pose and Wish especially) sound good, but they sound like demo versions of songs by the original band that recorded them. This EP is about as good as seeing a really talented cover band at some big corporate multi-plex nightclub. It sounds good, and sounds JUST like the original tunes, but why not just listen to the original tunes? Puciatto does a good job emulating all the singing styles of the bands they cover here, but his actual voice in a real DEP song is much more interesting. The live songs are good on here, though, but I don't think that they make the record. They just take so long between records it would be nice to hear a little EP of a couple new songs. This is just time-wasting filler. This doesn't cost much, so you will probably buy it. I, however, will wait to hear some music that they have actually written. C-.
Yuck
Don't hand me that "I'm a true fan" garbage. The simple question is "is this good?" The simple answer is not really. If you expected to hear DEP covers, as in a crazy math-metal barage version of JT and Soundgarden then you will be sad if you buy this. If you wanna hear an album of covers that sound like the original, just slightly different, then you might like this. I have to say that whether you're a "original" DEP fan or whatever, the song "unretrofied" is pretty bad.
