Album Review
Despite having been deeply influenced from an early age by the great organ trio recordings of guitarist Wes Montgomery and legendary organist Jimmy Smith, guitarist Chuck Loeb managed to spend the first 20 years of his career without ever working in that format, focusing instead on jazz fusion (with Steps Ahead and Fourplay) and spending some time as musical director for Stan Getz. But on his first organ trio project, Loeb sounds as comfortable as if he'd been doing this stuff for his whole career. Not only is his playing by turns supple, bluesy, and funky, but the eight original compositions that dominate the program all sound like standards (which is a compliment). "D.I.G." and "Annie's Song" lope along nicely at midtempo, driven gently by Loeb's soft-toned guitar, while "Organeleptic" is a beautiful but complicated headlong romp. Of the originals, only the title track (which is a bit on the smoove side) disappoints. Of the covers, highlights include a lovely take on Pedro Caetano's bossa classic "E Com Esse Que Vou Eu" (featuring Loeb's wife, singer Carmen Cuesta) and an even better interpretation of Hoagy Carmichael's "Skylark" (featuring vocals by Loeb and Cuesta's daughter Lizzy). Though it occasionally gets a bit soft in the middle, this album is a consistent pleasure from beginning to end.

SmoothJazz.com Review
One of the finest guitarists in contemporary jazz today ventures out with his own label and a return to the organ trio sound that was his earliest influence as a jazz guitarist. Recalling great duos like Wes Montgomery and Jimmy Smith, Mr. Loeb has created his own incredible trio sound by combining forces with Fourplay band-mate Harvey Mason on drums and rising B-3 star Pat Bianchi, with compelling performances from his wife Carmen Cuesta and daughter Lizzie Loeb, as well as guest shots from names like Will Lee, Till Bronner, and Eric Marienthal. PLAIN‘n’SIMPLE is outstanding on every level… from concept to compositions to players… so even if your experience with Chuck Loeb has only been in the Smooth Jazz arena, you’re going to love this new project. In Chuck’s own words, “…this recording truly captures the essence of who I am as a guitarist.” It’s an absolute must-have… brilliant! ~SCOTT O'BRIEN
Brilliant!
This is the Chuck Loeb I have been waiting to hear! Songs, arrangements, playing and audio are all A1 in every regard. Each track is a gem and Lizzy's voice on "Skylark" is really something special. I highly recommend "Plain & Simple" to fans of jazz music in general and specifically to fans of virtuoso guitar music.
Superb!
I am a stoned cold fan of Chucks, but he hit home with this one as my dad was a guitarist in the 30's and the style just brought me back to my childhood, listening to my dads trio rehearse. I grew up on Wes, Jimmie Smith and always loved the B3. Acoustics and engineering are spot on. the vocals are wonderful and Chuck is a stoned cold axman.
Keep the music coming Chuck.
