Album Review

Varese Sarabande does a great service by being the first label to present Jerry Goldsmith's entire score in all of its percussive glory. The additional 21 minutes, plus resequencing the music the way it originally appeared in the film, creates a fresh listening experience for this historically innovative soundtrack. A more dubious addition is the 16½-minute suite from Escape From the Planet of the Apes. The music — mirroring what happens when some ape scientists travel back to 1970s America — often sounds positively kitschy with its intrusions of electric guitars, sitars, electronic keyboards and rock drumming. Goldsmith meets Esquivel?

Goldsmith's Score is nothing short of a Classic!

Jerry Goldsmith's score to PLANET OF THE APES remains to this day a coveted adition in any soundtrack collector's collection. While not as thematic as some of Goldsmith's BETTER works such as STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE or RUDY, Planet of the Apes is a milestone in film music. Rather than use just a regualar orchestra, Goldsmith's score incorperates creative sounds such as a clarinetist fingering but not playing, horns playing with out mouthpieces and various ethnic flutes and percussion. The changing of motifs in just a matter of seconds makes "The Hunt" a highlight of the album. Motifs range from banshee to exillerating to entamate to atmospheric. Goldsmith's abbility to create both a tense yet memomorable piece shines as bright as ever. Varese's re-release does this score much justice and the sound is better than ever. Mind that the not-as-experienced Soundtrack listener might find the at times atmospheric cues rather boring, yet to the expierenced listener its film music at its best!

Maybe his best

Jerry Goldsmith wrote many, many brilliant scores - he is the equal of any soundtrack composer you can name in creativity and influence on later composers. This is the man at his creative summit - it employs everything including kitchen utensils and a Brazilian Cuika to create a one-of-a-kind sound. Maybe his best ... maybe the best ever.

Wheres the movies?

It's great they have the soundtrack but where's all the movies? I think they should keep making more movies and maybe videogames out of them so people can enjoy be interested by them because I think it would pretty cool to see apes building their own city of the future with everyday items and vehicles just as we humans built ours. I also think it be pretty awsome to see them learn about new things like autism and try to find a cure for it just like what we're trying to do. I know it sounds weird that I'm talking about something crazy like this but I'm just trying to come up with something creative is all. 5 stars it is.
