Finally

I became a Cave In fan just as they were releasing Jupiter--Cave In's opus. Jupiter was a lush, and layered "space-rock" album; a departure from their previous sound of brutal metalcore. Unfortunately, a great deal of their fans hated the new sound and many left the fan base. Subsequently, Cave In released "Antenna", a forgettable Foo Fighter-style alternative album at best. Then the rest of their fans departed. Cave In released a very listenable, but somewhat soul-less "Perfect Pitch Black" next. By that time the band was fractured, with each member focusing more on side projects. Cave In caved in.

Luckily for us remaining fans who were hanging on to a little bit of hope, Cave In returned to form with the release of
the "Planets of Old EP". Fans of "Until Your Heart Stops" and "Jupiter" will both be pleased, as this album appears to perfectly blend the sounds of both. One track, "The Red Trail", a dirty little speed metal outing, actually reminds me of the band Converge. A very good thing indeed!

Let's hope that this release is a look at what's to come out of the Cave In camp in the future...

So amazing!

I didn't even know this record had come out when I happened upon it in iTunes. And was pleasantly surprised. This brings me back so seeing these guys in a hot cramped basement in Minneapolis, right before until your heart stops came out. These songs are great! You can tell everyone in the band is writing the music together again. And that's what makes a great band, when everybody has input into the songs. It's got everything you want in a good cave in record heavy driving bass, quirky guitar riffs, sonic ebb and flow. And just enough space rock to make you remember what you like about Jupiter. If your hesitating on buying this, don't! Its well worth the money.

If this is any indication of what we can expect...

If "Planets of Old" is any indication of the sound we can expect from the good ol' boys from Boston, then we're in for one hell of a follow-up LP that sounds a lot like what the true, core Cave In fans have been waiting over ten years for and that's a REAL followup to their 2 masterpieces...the first one being, "Until Your Heart Stops" and the second being, "Jupiter". Get ready for an incredible LP from Steve, JR, Adam, and Caleb!
Cheers!!

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Alt metal outfit Cave In originated in 1995, in Methuen, MA, when Stephen Brodsky and Jay Frechette got the idea to start a band in the vein of some of their favorites: Failure, Unwound, Snapcase, etc. With Brodsky on guitar and Frechette's vocals, they added bassist Justin Matthes, guitarist Adam McGrath, and drummer John-Robert Conners, and recorded some early demos. Split 7"s with Gambit, Piebald, and Early Grace followed before Cave In got a chance for its own, courtesy of Hydra Head, which appeared...
