Album Review

Me'Shell Ndegéocello's debut album twists and turns through so many genres — R&B, pop, jazz, hip-hop — that it's hard to put a finger on just where she wants to take its 13 songs. That she also spins conventional racial and sexual identity here makes Plantation Lullabies an occasionally overwhelming — as well as a vibrantly sophisticated — listen. Ndegéocello defies labels throughout, tagging her slinking and crawling songs with a rubbery flow that's just as rooted in '70s funky soul as it is in '90s hip-hop culture. The best songs here — "If That's Your Boyfriend (He Wasn't Last Night)," "Dred Loc," and "Outside Your Door" — work their way into their grooves with a seamless, and almost uniform, bounce. It can be a bit derivative (for all of Ndegéocello's genre-crossing, she always seems to go back to the same musical blueprint), but most of the time it's just about as boundary-busting and as affecting as '90s R&B gets.

various Me'Shell Ndegeocello downloads

Saw Me'Shell Ndegeocello perform for the first time over the weekend. I immediately went to the iTunes store and bought nineteen tracks from various albums of hers. Check her out, you will not be sorry!

MESMERIZING, GREAT MUSIC!!

I bought this album back in 1993 and played it non-stop for weeks!! Plantation Lullabies is absolutely brilliant. Ndegeocello is a talent beyond measure!! Still sounds just as good today!!! You have to add this to your colllection. Love it!!

The sublime passion of true artistry!

Me'Shell has made eight albums and "Plantation Lullabies" still holds its own over time. The raw power of her vocals display a wide range of emotion and pathos. Her smooth come in "dig you like a old school record" is enough to get anybody nostalgic for the oldies. The pain and anguish from "Shootin Up and Gettin High" pays homage to lost friends, while sonically the bass and the drums lines will have you addicted to this beautifully written eulogy. On the romance side, no one does it better than Me'Shell. Her innocent pleading in "Sweet Love" or her ardent admiration in "Dreadlocks" takes you back to your first crush when you planned your day around chance meetings with your beloved. As superb as she is lyrically, you can't deny that Me'Shell is a master of the groove. The best track "Step into the Projects" is a perfect wedding of melancholy horns, anguished pianos riffs and a melody that 'Bird' would envy. For all true music lovers, this introductory album by Me'Shell sets the tone for the other seven that follow. In it you will find all you need to create peace in your world, musically speaking.

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Although Me'Shell Ndegéocello scored a few hits early in her career, the singer/bassist opted to concentrate subsequently on more challenging material by exploring the politics of race and sex, among other topics. Born Michelle Johnson on August 29, 1968 and spending the first few years of her life in Germany (her father was both a military man and a jazz saxophonist), Ndegéocello relocated with her family to Virginia in the early '70s, as the youngster developed an interest in music. As a teenager,...
