Album Review

Play Deep, the Outfield's debut album, contains a couple of singles that settled quite nicely into mid-'80s radio. Guided by Tony Lewis' airborne vocals and John Spinks' regimented guitar bluster, they managed to place two of the album's best songs within Billboard's Top 20. "Your Love" made it all the way to the number six spot in March of 1986, thanks to Lewis' high-pitched holler that dominates the opening of the song and a harmonious chorus that is overly smooth and rock savvy. Peaking at number 19 four months later, "All the Love in the World" is an unblemished rock tune with an effectively echoed vocal track, again highlighting the band's sweet-sounding consonance mixed in with rugged guitar work. The uncharted material sounds just as fluent and is anything but filler, especially efforts like "Say It Isn't So" and "I Don't Need Her," along with slower songs like "Everytime You Cry." Play Deep is a worthy first release from this British trio, led by a novel guitar and vocal concoction.

Incredible Collection of Songs

I own hundreds of CDs, and this is one of maybe five that I would want to have for eternity (if I could take them with me when I go). Years ago --during college (and several years after the album's release)-- I would keep this CD in my player for months at a time and just listen to it over and over. Owning this album inspired me to buy the rest of The Outfield's collection of albums, which are also worth owning and enjoying albeit they are not quite as masterful as this album. Play deep has a way of taking me back in time to a period in my life when I had very little, but seemed so happy. Hearing this album certainly helped contribute to that happiness then ...and makes me happy again when I hear it now even 20+ years after its release.

It's all good...

This was the second CD in my life that I loved in its entirety. My friends and I listened to Play Deep hundreds of times during the summer of 1996; and we loved every single song. It's fun, it's thoughtful and their sound was quite different than any other band of the day. You can't help but sing along to all of it.

The Outfield - Ahhhh the memories!!

So, I have this album on wax (vinyl) and it's always one of the most unbelievable party hits hands down. I'm shocked as to how many people have no idea who sings "Your Love" and "Say It Isn't So," but they fly head over heels when I put this on towards the end of the night - and it isn't just the booze...Now, the B side, or the final 5 songs are just as stellar as the A side and I guarantee that this album will make your 80's record collection complete. Wait, you don't have this album?? "SAY IT ISN'T SO!"

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Ironically, given their obsession with America's favorite pastime, the Outfield got their start in London's East End. Playing under the name the Baseball Boys, the trio of bassist/singer Tony Lewis, guitarist/keyboardist John Spinks, and drummer Alan Jackman played around London and recorded some early demos, attracting the attention of Columbia/CBS Records. They were signed shortly thereafter and began working on their debut album, Play Deep, which was released in 1985. The album was a smash success,...
