Album Review

Essentially, this is a reconfigured version of the 2005-vintage Gold compilation on the Moody Blues, in Universal's double-CD series. A triple-CD set with 36 songs versus that double-disc's 34, it's a lot less crowded on each platter (and one would think that another couple of songs wouldn't have been out of order — like how about "The Day We Meet Again'" from Octave). The total overlap between the two is well over 90-percent, the major difference being the absence here of "Forever Autumn" by Justin Hayward from War of the Worlds. The annotation is minimal, the sound is excellent, and the package is small and convenient. But it is also totally unnecessary for anyone who already owns Gold.

Legendary band but mediocre compilation

The iTunes review of this album is a misleading, as this is most definitely not a re-issue of the best-of compilation from 1974. By my count, at least fourteen of the tracks were not even recorded until after 1974, and many of the pre-1974 songs included here were not on the original (and vice versa). The original 1974 double album was entitled "This is the Moody Blues" and was a more balanced representation of the band's first seven albums, with a more cohesive play order. Although this is a good introduction for anyone with only passing knowledge of the band, to truly enjoy their music you need to listen to it in the context of the original albums, each of which was based on a specific theme with a unique musical tone throughout. Some bands' music transfers well to compilations, but the Moodies signature sound is best enjoyed in the natural habitat of the original albums.
