Phil Vassar was already a hit country songwriter when he signed his own recording deal with Arista Records in 1998, having penned hits for Alan Jackson, Jo Dee Messina, Tim McGraw, and others, and he didn’t waste a whole lot of time before hitting the charts with his own versions of his songs. Vassar was born in Lynchburg, VA, and won a track scholarship to James Madison University, where he first began to take music seriously.
