iTunes Review
The Smiths were one of the U.K.'s brightest pop acts of the '80s, with singer Morrissey setting his witty and emotionally honest lyrics against Johnny Marr's serpentine, arpeggiated guitar lines. This tribute smartly avoids trying to mimic the band's singular charm, aiming to redefine the songs as if they'd always been part of each performer's catalog. Trespassers William slow down "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" until it purrs with sweetness. Solvents turn "Is It Really So Strange" into a campfire clap-along. Elk City interprets "I Know It's Over" as a skipping piece of chamber pop. Belly's Tanya Donelly finds an intimacy to "Shoplifters of the World Unite." Kitten retains the firepower of "Panic" with a Eurodisco sound resembling Blondie. Greg Laswell sits at the piano for a dramatic take on "Half a Person." William Fitzsimmons whispers the lullaby "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want," and the legendary Wedding Present adds a muscular power to "Hand in Glove." It's a worthwhile tribute that reinvents the songs while retaining The Smiths' glorious spirit.
Customer Reviews
Best one yet!
I'm a tremendous Smiths fan and as a completest I have everything they've ever done along with every cover song and tribute. This one is by far the best tribute yet. Not only do the bands avoid trying to duplicate the Smiths original versions -- they actually turn each song into a wonderful new version which somehow adds dimension and depth to the original. If your a fan, I recommend buying this album, stepping back with an open mind and allow the songs to unfold. Don't rush to make a judgement. These bands don't profess to be The Smiths. They're simply celebrating the strength of Morrissey and Marr's songwriting partnership with wonderful new renditions. Give a listen to: Panic, How Soon Is Now, Please Please Please, Is It Really So Strange, and Half A Person to start. Tremendous job!!!
A stunning tour de force from American Laundromat
Stunningly successful, a genuine miracle...magic indeed...American Laundromat is fast developing a strong reputation for great indiefolk coverage, but each new release confirms and builds on that expectation...the Dala, Sara Lov, Williams Fitzsimmons, Greg Laswell, and Trespassers Williams tracks, especially, are some of the best folk I've heard all year. More generally, American Laundromat has solicited a powerhouse set of artists from the indie and indiefolk worlds and given them license to find their own hearts in the music of their influences – and the resulting record is a tight diamond of consistency that elevates both performers and songwriters, a gem absolutely worth your time and patronage.
Wait until you hear "How Soon is Now? done with a string quartet…no, seriously...
I love cover songs. The more creatively different from the original version the better. American Laundromat has made covering other artist's songs something of an art form above and beyond simply covering other artist's songs. Case in point is "Please, Please, Please," which gathers together twenty tracks of Morrissey-Marr goodness covered by some great indie bands. Listen to acts such as Kitten, Tanya Donelly (yes, late of Belly), and Rubber Ring cover songs such as "Panic," "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want," and "Girl in a Coma" will either make you fall in love with the music of The Smiths all over again, or, if you're new to the Morrissey party, will hopefully get you interested enough to seek out tracks that were overlooked for cover consideration ("Cemetery Gates" anyone?). The best track by far is Mike Viola's take on "How Soon is Now," not because it is one of the more well-known Smiths tunes, but rather because The Section Quartet's strings absolutely own Johnny Marr's original signature tremolo guitar riff. Well done, AL!!!
