Album Review

Zipless and Slow to Burn were preoccupied with matters of this earth, particularly corporeal matters such as desire and yearning. Plutonium Glow, on the other hand, while still intensely sweaty, shifts its focus to the stars. Vanessa Daou sounds even more dynamic in this setting. Daou has a voice like a feather that literally floats off into the crisp night air, leaving the listener with a sweet but sometimes sorrowful aftertaste. Her voice, as much of a thin wisp as it is, seems to be reverberating from some deep, dark place and, like her first two albums, betrays an almost zealous, sacred sense of passion mirrored by the striking, contrasting imagery in her lyrics to songs such as "Alive" and "Cherries in the Snow." Futuristic keyboard arrangements leave a lot of space in the music, opening it up to a certain mystery. Peter Daou seems to be drawing from a more expansive bag of sounds on Plutonium Glow than he has in the past, particularly electronic sources. Spacy blips and bleeps dart in and out of the songs, propelling the music toward the vague essence of a future dotted with references to orbits and rockets, the speed of light, and other bleak, spacy elements. He has incorporated some cutting-edge effects into the music, as well. "Zero G" has an echoey, panting sound looped as part of the background rhythm, and innovative beats that are slowly inductive form a core focus on the album. The title song offers a rhythm track with kitchen-sink effects that wants to move into drum'n'bass overdrive, though it never actually reaches that point. Overall, the music has an expansiveness and a wide-open quality. It has depth and is distancing, but never off-putting, never less than palpable. The Daous continue to create stimulating (in more ways than one) and forward-looking music, equally at home on the dancefloor, in the car, and in the comforts of a bedroom. [Daou Music released the CD in 1998 with a different track order, replacing "Alive" with "Visions of You."]

She brings femme fatale sexy back!

I first discovered Vanessa on Music Choice cable radio just playing in the background as I read and work. If something grabs me, I stop and take note. The song they played I still can't find on iTunes, but on Pandora they played enough for me to become seriously addicted to her spell! Wicked or Angelic I still can't tell but her magic keeps me satisfied and always coming back for more! My wife is now addicted as well! She brings back the 80's bad girl singers like Prince had produced and was surrounded by, Vanity, and the "Sugar Walls" of Sheena Easton.

But Vanessa is not totally trip-hop, nor jazz, nor pop, nor dance/house. But all mixed or remixed into one sexy gumbo pot!

I really like her Out of Print material digital only as it seems the most sultry and for some reason just turns on my flashlight wanting to go get lost in her black forest!

I wish there was more about her out, but I'm new and I understand she is very open and approachable by other artist who wish to collaborate via remix or music video art etc.

I seem to recall finding a radio interview with her and another artist discussing their "open minded" collaboration!

I'd love to work with her as well as see the likes of UK producer Brian Eno and The talented Daniel Lanois! The western pedal or lush lapsteel might take her in the direction they did with U2 on Joshua Tree. But she reminds me of a female Ray Lamontagne in that like Ray he stays at a very sutble tone and never tries to over color his voice with pitch machines but just lays it down like it should be recorded. The listener of Vanessa's music and lyrics also must dig deep inside her words and poetry which are painted with lots of red and purples and her overall theme seems to be experimentation not only in the recording studio but in the love making playground! I think thats why my wife and I find her music very attractive and insightful if not intoxicating with the smells of wonderful sensual lovemaking! We are always more than satisfied! Thanks Vanessa! ;-)
