Album Review

Worldbeat ambassadors Afro Celt Sound System go the remix route on the two-disc set Pod. Essentially a career overview, Pod features 13 tracks culled from the group's ten-year history remixed by various bandmembers and DJs. Each song mixes in live bass and drums, adding a heavy backbeat to the band's swirling, genre-bending epics. Though each track is listed separately, the recording works as one solid piece with transitions that flow effortlessly into one another. The remixes themselves focus heavily on the thundering, tribal assault of the collective's live shows, occasionally veering off into ambient landscapes — Rae & Christian's take on "Persistence of Memory" is like an audio version of the ocean floor. "Whirly 3" and "Eireann" do the best job at conveying the System's Celtic leanings, building a relentless pulse around serpentine uillean pipes. The rest is perfectly executed, occasionally innovative, and mostly unnecessary. Fans will be disappointed by the lack of "actual" new material, and listeners with distaste for Real World's militant attention to sonic detail will find little comfort. The real gem is the second disc, a beautifully crafted DVD that includes live footage in Seattle at the WOMAD festival and videos for "When You're Falling," "North," and "Persistence of Memory."

Great songs, and great remixes to boot

ACSS have been delighting me for years with their music, and this remix collection is just fantastic. The world-fusion/smooth-beat mix they cook up is out of this world. "Eireann" is definitely my favorite song here.

Listen to "Persistence of Memory" on repeat....

Incredible mood. I can think of no other song that has so dramatically taken me along with it. Rae and Christian are good, but here they REALLY shine. Compare this to their own, faster version of this melody, "Get a Life" (featuring Bobby Womack), and you'll see what I mean.

Hits & Misses

As with most remix collections, this set of Afro Celt reworkings has its highs and lows. Of the thirteen tracks, only five are truly standouts, three of these being remixes done by the Afro Celts themselves (tracks 1, 8 and 13). The two others are the Mass Remixes of Further In Time (4) and Éireann (10). The remainder are fairly lackluster or hindered by the inevitablely lame beats employed. Rae & Christian's remix of Persistence of Memory misses out on excellent by the slight repetitiveness of the added keys. The enhanced cd included two bonus videos and is definitely worth searching out, as one includes an 8 1/2 minute "Video Mix" of North, while the other is a lengthy live medley from Womad 2001, featuring Shadowman, Lagan and Colossus.
