Album Review

Chevelle's debut, Point #1, finds them collaborating with producer Steve Albini to create forceful, mercurial indie rock. Dynamic rhythms and melodies predominate on the album, and songs like "Open," "Dos," and "Blank Earth" combine delicate interludes with blasts of noise. In line with Chicago's ambitious music scene, Chevelle's challenging take on rock is also a rewarding one.

One of my Favorite Albums

Chevelle's "Point #1" is one of my favorite albums, easily within my top 5. The 'Open' and 'Point #1' tracks are a great entrance into their debut album. 'Point #1' delivers a strong spiritual message of sin and repentance, a Christian message that has since almost disappeared entirely from Chevelle's music and image today. The music is overall aggressive, with mellow tracks like 'Dos' and 'Peer'. The drop-tuned sound of Pete's guitar and raw vocals are excellent, the bass is powerful enough to shake subwoofers in some songs and drums are tight to the... point. Some of my favorite tracks on the album include: -Long -Open & Point #1 -SMA -Mia -Prove to You The weakest track, if I was forced to choose, would be 'Anticipation'. However, I would still recommend purchasing the entire album, as it is easily worth the $9.90. This album is clean.

Bland if you're not looking specifically for it

I have all of the Chevelle albums and my views on this one may be tainted considering I got it AFTER I owned their two more-known albums. But I don't know how their label didn't drop them like a bad habit after they released this. The music is samey and droning, with many of the same guitaring tricks overused. The recording quality itself makes this album hard to listen to as the vocals are too low and the instruments are groggy. Don't get me wrong -- if you're a hardcore Chevelle fan, you'll want to get this just as I did. It's good to see that they can/have evolved. And there's DEFINATELY some songs on here I'd probably love (Point #1, Mia, SMA) if they ever released a remastered version of it. But as this album goes as-is, you'll only appreciate it if you try to.

Rock On

Chevelle is my favorite band. This CD contributes greatly to that. Every CD this band has put out has been so amazing and this one is no exception!

Formed: 1995 in Chicago, IL

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Inspired by the lurching riffs of Helmet and the soft/loud vocal dynamics of Tool, the Chicago-based trio Chevelle formed in 1995 with an aggressive, heavy sound. Comprised of brothers Sam (drums), Pete (vocals, guitar), and Joe Loeffler (bass), the band began playing parties and outdoor events, which quickly led to bookings at Chicago clubs when youngest member Joe was just 14 years old. In 1999, Chevelle released their Steve Albini-produced debut album, Point #1, on Squint Entertainment. Three...
