iTunes Review

Though they’re not a couple, there’s a heavy tension emanating from the Civil Wars’ Joy Williams and John Paul White that’s palpable in the music. Opening with the title-track to their Poison & Wine EP, the duo gives us the romance we wanted but never got from Markéta Irglová and Glen Hansard’s performance in the 2006 film Once. Listen to their voices braid together on the following “Go” where Williams’ breathy inflections resonate with White’s high tenor. His voice is able seep around hers with such a tight embrace that a third overtone can be heard vining out of the mix. The similarly bewitching “Pressing Flowers” starts with White whisper-singing for Williams before branching out into another stunning example of the their folk-based repartee.

Story behind the song... by Joy Williams

"Poison & Wine" is a musical snapshot about the dichotomy of love - that while it can be the thing that destroys you, it can also be the very same thing that beckons and builds you. JP and I are both married - have been for several years now - and we got to talking one day about what a tug and pull our individual relationships can be. The longer you know someone - and the longer you allow someone to know you - the more the light and shadows inside each person become more vivid. This song was our attempt at being brutally honest about the dangerous and beautiful process of knowing and being known.

Fantastic EP

The Civil Wars draw their listeners into a place of sweet tension in this EP. Joy's floating vocal lines and John Paul's powerful, meloncholy, aura hold the listener's full attention. The musical play between the duo moves the poetic lyrics into tangible, heartfelt reality. The Civil Wars achieve musical catharsis, and that is a rarity in our time.

Soothing vocals, great harmonies, mesmerizing lyrics

I love everything about this debut EP from The Civil Wars. Their songs are perfectly crafted - you can't help but be drawn into the emotions felt by the story being told as it's sung to you in perfect harmony. Joy Williams and John Paul White are genius together and I can't wait to hear more of their stuff in the future!
