Album Review

In the wake of a solid music-press buzz, Polara's debut album is as fresh and bracing as a bucket of ice water in the face. It's kind of hard to pigeonhole this band, which is refreshing — part dewy-eyed psychedelic sentimentality ("If you feel it, let it show!," singer Ed Ackerson implores on "Avenue E"), part punky bombast ("Counting Down" features the world's harshest guitar sound) and part gimmicky overkill (check out the voice treatment on "One Foot"), this album has all the offbeat charm of a goofy kid nephew. How do they manage to get such a consistently horrific guitar sound on "Counting Down" and yet make the song itself so pleasant? And how do they deliver those whimsical lyrics without ever sounding hippy-dippy? Polara's home base of Minneapolis has a history of producing weird but lovable bands and personalities (Husker Du, the Replacements, Prince), so this is just one more example of the fact that breeding shows.

Polara's Debut

Polara is one of my favorite "unknown" bands. Ed Ackerson's voice is subtle and subdued, but his breathy vocals set an interesting mood along with the nearly-ever-present, almost ambient noise background noise. The songs here range from all out guitar bash to softer, relaxing folkie stuff. It all fits nicely together to make an enjoyable album.
Counting Down is a great rock song that stretches the limits of what a guitar should sound like and Source of Light keeps on in the same vein. Taupe and Anniversary 6 are both near-acoustic ballads that are downright beautiful in excecution and delivery, with spacey backgrounds and vocal treatment. Headphones make the experience even more surreal. Listening Now and Letter Bomb are pretty similar midtempo tracks, but are very good as well.
There are a couple of throwaways here...Squelch is so over the top covered in, well, squelch, you can hardly discern the vocals and instruments and State, with it's quiet beginning and explosive middle, while not a bad song doesn't really do much for me. And bless iTunes for not even including the obnoxious untitled track 13, which would damn near spoil the album if you couldn't hit the stop button.
All in all, a really good listening experience. And that's true of most of Polara's catalog. Unfortunately iTunes is missing the next two albums from Polara. C'est La Vie and Formless / Functional (personal favorite) are both recommended and can be had for cheap on most popular shopping sites on the web.

Biography

Formed: Minneapolis, MN

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Following the dissolution of his retro-pop band the 27 Various, Minneapolis-based singer/guitarist Ed Ackerson formed Polara with Peter Anderson (drums), Jennifer Jurgens (guitar, vocals, organ), and Jason Orris (bass, vocals). Where Ackerson's music once sprung from the inspirations of '60s pop, with Polara he absorbed the influence of '70s Krautrock, layering his melodic songs with keyboards, samplers, and electronics. The group's eponymous debut, issued in 1995, won widespread critical acclaim...
