iTunes Review

In 1988, Lyle Lovett was still skirting the fringes of Nashville, writing and singing down-home songs that shared more with the folk and roots tradition than slick, mainstream country. He wrote with a fine-bristled painter's brush, daubing his songs with subtle, literate colors and telling poignant stories. Songs like "Give Back My Heart" and "M-O-N-E-Y" bounce and swing, while tenderhearted tunes like "I Loved You Yesterday" and "Walk Through the Bottomland" are profoundly touching. Both sides demonstrate Lovett's versatility, and he'd go on to build his artistry on each side of this musical equation.

One of my top ten all time faves

I had this album for five years before I discovered it. I bought it for one song that my friend would play when he was fighting with his wife (She's no lady) and that's all I listened to for a long time. One day the CD changer grabbed it while I was working in the yard and I' have been hooked ever since. You don't have to love contry music or Texas to love this album. Let it sing to your soul and you can't go wrong.

Profoundly Human.....

One listen to this record and it's clear why Julia Roberts fell in love with Lyle. His sense of nuance and inflection is something that will move you to the core. "If I Had A Boat" makes me well up with emotion every time. The production, writing and performance are all top notch. Good stuff!...

Still love it 20 years later!

Back in 1988 or 1989 I caught Lyle on late night television (either Letterman or Carson) and instantly loved his music. After 20 years, I still listen to this album. Can't say that about too much else that I was listening to back in the late '80's. Pontiac stands the test of time.

Genre: Country

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Lyle Lovett was one of the most distinctive and original singer/songwriters to emerge during the '80s. Though he was initially labeled as a country singer, the tag never quite fit him. Lovett had more in common with '70s singer/songwriters like Guy Clark, Jesse Winchester, Randy Newman, and Townes Van Zandt, combining a talent for incisive, witty lyrical detail with an eclectic array of music, ranging from country and folk to big-band swing and traditional pop. Lovett's literate, multi-layered songs...
