Customer Reviews
Blander than the original.
I gave this album two stars. One for John Doe's "Cryin' but My Tears Are Far Away", he is after all, one of the original Knitters. The second star is for calling attention to this greatly under-rated band. X was one of the greatest bands ever and their side project, The Knitters rocked. This compilation pales in comparison to the real deal.
Better than the original?
As a huge X fan, I got a kick out of their first Knitters project ('Critter'), with its rough-around-the-edges covers of classic Americana (among which "The New World" in its glorious original form fits in very well, thank you). Hearing some of the songs here on 'Knitter,' I couldn't help but ask why they were done, as they sound a lot like the ones on 'Critter,' -- and Doe's presence on one song adds to that "why-did-they-bother-ish" feeling. But other songs just sound better and truer here on 'Knitter' than they did on 'Critter' where was a bit of a hey-look-at-us-we're-a-punk-band-doing-hillbilly-songs vibe. Know what I mean? Overall, I definitely recommend this record, maybe even more than 'Critter,' and I'd not recommend buying both... but I'd recommend either less than, say, 'Los Angeles' or 'Under the Big Black Sun,' which deserve at least five stars each.
wow, what
these are the worst covers of any songs i've ever heard. what were these people thinking? if you really love the knitters don't ruin them by recording yerself doing the worst job playing their songs ever. ew. I love The Knitters but this is terrible.
