iTunes Review

Rowland S. Howard’s guitar work with Nick Cave and The Birthday Party was groundbreaking, as he (and the band) fomented the “goth” sound of the ‘80s while fusing the genre to a swampy blues vibe. Rowland influenced countless artists with haunting, echoing tones that veered between squalling and jagged, howling and sinister. Pop Crimes is his second solo work, coming a decade after 2000’s Teenage Snuff Film, and in a tragic twist, Rowland succumbed to liver cancer just months after its release. Pop Crimes opens with the languid, lusty “(I Know) A Girl Called Jonny,” featuring the dusky vocals of Jonnine Standish (of HTRK), and the track morphs into the surprisingly moving and wistful “Shut Me Down.” It’s a quieter, more solemn Howard at work here, his guitar honed to a slightly less abrasive tone, keyboards slinking and slithering under his gruff vocals pondering “our planet of perpetual sorrows” and “Catholic girls with Uzis.” Howard left an amazing body of work and Pop Crimes is a bittersweet send-off, showcasing Howard’s best solo work ever.

TOP NOTCH

I've been waiting for years for a new Rowland album. This album DOES NOT Disappoint.

Rowland S Good

Another amazing album from the incredible Rowland S. Howard! This is definitely one for those who like well-written and well-sung lyrics and some deeper, heavy-bass-sounding, guitars. It's very unique music, well worth a listen. It's a shame his previous album "Teenage Snuff Film" is no longer up for grabs here as well.

We waited too long. But well worth it..RIP ROWLAND!

another classic - yet unfortunately not well known- RSH album. well worth the wait since his true solo masterpiece TEENAGE SNUFF FILM from 1999. great originals here - but his astonishing re-work of a classic new wave hit "Life's What You Make It" (Talk Talk) is genius- much like his re-work of "White Wedding" on Teenage Snuff Film- making them sound like one of his own.. Ex Birthday Party bandmate and former BAD SEED Mick Harvey is on drums and organ here. The POP CRIMES will be the fact it will take his death for him to be appreciated again in this decade.....
