iTunes Review
Herbie Hancock has had a truly amazing and varied career: the pianist/composer has played classic post bop, spacey electro-acoustic jazz, funk, and even had an MTV hit with “Rockit,” a cut from his 1983 album, Future Shock. He continues to work on all sorts of projects, and on the 2005 release Possibilities, he collaborates with a number of pop artists. The album is very much a collection of songs, but songs that have been expanded to provide ample room for solos, especially Hancock’s. On “Safiatou,” which features Carlos Santana on guitar and the Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo on vocals, Hancock has no trouble jumping right into the Afro-Latin groove. The pianist sensitively accompanies Christina Aguilera, who turns in a striking rendition of the old Leon Russell chestnut, “A Song for You.” Jonny Lang and Joss Stone appear on “When Love Comes to Town,” a latter-day slice of blues-rock that is lifted into another realm when Hancock makes his harmonically altering entrance. One of the album’s highlights is a hushed, mysterious version of Paul Simon’s “I Do It for Your Love.” Simon impresses as the band creates wonderfully moody music behind him.

Explore the Possibilities!
Herbie Hancock truly does explore the “Possibilities” when you gather some of the greatest vocalists of our time and take them on an exploration of contemporary Jazz, courtesy of Mr. Hancock. Without a doubt, this is one of the best “featured guest” compilations released and is destined to be a classic – an absolute must have, your favorite artists have never sounded better! This album delivers starting with the bouncy, upbeat “Stitched Up” featuring John Mayer to the standout performance of the album, Christina Aguilera’s rendition of “A Song for You”, which uses her range and emotion more fully and intelligently than in any song I have ever heard her perform before. Annie Lennox, formerly of the Eurythmics does a haunting version of Paula Cole’s “Hush, Hush, Hush” like only she can, with a blend of conviction and wrenching compassion. There are some new artists featured that are somewhat unknown, but excellent as well. Simply put, I have a lot of contemporary Jazz albums, and I’ve always been impressed with the masterful Mr. Herbie Hancock, but what he has assembled here is at the top of my playlist; and it is sure to be at the top of yours too!
Delicious Jazz
Blast it. John Mayer proves he's worth all the hype right here. Santana is instantly recognizable, yet refreshingly new sounds abound. Christing Aguilera should stick to jazz, b/c her pop stuff doesn't come NEAR her range, showcased beautifully here. I am serious. I wasn't going to buy the album b/c she's on it, but I am glad I found the nads to get it. Annie Lennox is gorgeous; I thought Paula Cole's rendition of "Hush..." is beautiful but Annie blows it out of the water. Sting, as usual, comes through with a fabulous performance. I'd never heard of Damien Rice or Lisa Hannigan; however their performance is one of my favorites on the whole album. Raul Midón is wonderful and Trey's performance is certainly status quo, which is GREAT to me. Go, HERBIE HANCOCK, for getting this blistering CD together. I'm wowed.
Jonny Lang and Joss Stone!
A match made in blues heaven. One of the great U2 songs is done over in awe inspiring fashion. Lang's scorching guitar and vocals combined with the sweet sweet soul of Joss Stone make this truly one of the vocal events of the year. This track is the highlight of another awesome effort from Herbie Hancock!
