A better tribute album to a fantastic artist could'
For those that don't know about Johnny Clegg, he was the first musical artist during South Africa's Apartheid era to create a racially mixed band...Juluka. His mix of English and Zulu lyrics can go from deeply political to just a good, fun song. The artists on this tribute, some known and some not as known, give excellent renditions of his work. Jimmy Buffett's Great Heart is a live perfomance, worth the album price even for non-Parrotheads. Joan Baez and the Soweto Gospel Choir hit all the ranges of one of Clegg's early political lyrics, Asimbonanga. There is another cover of this song from the Soweto Gospel Choir that combines Peter Gabriel's Biko available on iTunes. Clegg fans or people looking for something new to listen to, will enjoy this album.
Great Heart/Great Songs
Johnny Clegg is a phenominal artist. His music transends cultures and borders. This is an excellent tribute album.
Good, but . . .
The original versions of these songs are much better. Even this new "remix" version of "Scatterlings of Africa" sounds quite weak compared to the power of the original. My advice is go to the Johnny Clegg site on iTunes and buy the real songs - then maybe come back to these covers. However, once you hear Johnny Clegg's original recording of, say, "Dela (I Know Why the Dog Howls at the Moon)" you probably won't need to hear anyone else sing it.
