Album Review
Following right on the heels of the release of the aborted Crack a Smile sessions, Power to the People might interest some longtime fans, but it's probably borderline at best for anyone who isn't still a complete devotee. There are two distinct sections — five new studio tracks and a sort of greatest-hits-live show recorded on their 1999 reunion tour with C.C. Deville — and the liner notes don't give much background about either. The new material isn't bad, although the title track's nod to rap-tinged alternative metal comes off as awkward, more like an Aerosmith/"Walk This Way"-type rocker with no hooks. The others will appeal to longtime fans, though — "Can't Bring Me Down" is a defiant rocker, "The Last Song" a typical Poison power ballad, and "Strange" a sort of electric/acoustic in-betweener. Furthermore, C.C. Deville makes his Poison lead vocal debut — complete with vocoder-style effects! — on the catchy (if unfortunately titled) "I Hate Every Bone in Your Body But Mine." The concert portion is decent, but it isn't really necessary either (and Bret Michaels seems to have lost a bit of range). Hardcore fans will be pleased to have a memento of Deville's return to the band, and the decision to combine new studio tracks with what's essentially a fan souvenir certainly reflects Poison's status as a cult band in the year 2000. But it can't help giving the impression that the band didn't have enough songs (or, perhaps, confidence) to issue a full-fledged new studio album, and the release ends up less than satisfying.
Customer Reviews
i cant wait till i can hate you tonight!
i love this album personally, the 5 studio cuts are so good, the best would have to be i hate every bone in your body but mine, even tho C.C isent an amazing singer, its jsut a good song! then what more could you want! a live album from poison, which i think is much better then Swallow this live....just me tho btw...why isent this under the normal poison section?
Tenenage Angst Has Paid Off Well, Now I'm Bored And Old
this album seems pretty good to me. the live stuff is better than swallow this live...especially on vocals, but i think C.C. should practice a bit more on his guitar because he isnt playing songs like talk dirty to me and fallen angel in the right octave, maybe im just too picky. All in all a pretty good album.
New songs coupled with the same old ones...
The new studio tracks here just seem to lack the old Poison "flavor" and do little to create a new Poison "flavor" of any note. Nothing stands out from the new stuff on this release other than "I Hate Every Bone...", but this is simply due to its wit--albeit juvenile in nature. The older songs on here? Live versions of the same old songs, once again re-packaged--this time as what is tantamount to "filler" material b/c they didn't put enough new tracks together for a full release. Poison has a "Greatest Hits", a "Best of", a "Best of Blues and Ballads", an earlier live album ("Swallow This Live"), and now this--all playing off of the same old songs in one form or another. Even "Crack a Smile..." had some of the same old songs on it. It begs to ask how long they will keep re-packaging the same / similar material and expecting people to buy it.
