iTunes Review
Throughout the ‘80s, like many veteran rockers, Rush had to come to terms with an ever-changing landscape that meant dealing with the video age and the emergence of new recording technologies. Since Rush was among the more progressive bands of the ‘70s, it was only natural that the band would find a comfortable fit for the new synthesizers and electronic effects sweeping onto modern rock albums. While there are no twenty-minute epics, Neil Peart did pen thematically ambitious songs that deal with everything from nuclear war ("Manhattan Project") and monetary greed ("The Big Money") to suburban alienation ("Middletown Dreams"). The musical interplay between band members is accentuated with the layers of synthesizers that percolate and align with drummer Peart's physically punishing attack. "Grand Designs," "Marathon" and "Mystic Rhythms" don't just channel the band's illustrious instrumental abilities but press them into the service of some of the group's most underrated songs, and singer Geddy Lee is no longer left to wail like a banshee into the abyss but is supported with a wide array of vocal effects and harmonies.

Every Song is Great: Like an Essay on the State of the HUMAN RACE!
This was probably the year I first saw RUSH live in concert as A teenager in the 80's So I like all the songs on the album. What I find incredible is that no matter what are intrinsic to their sound the lyrics, the tone and craftmaships of all RUSH songs are a masterpiece for someone. They are true Artist in that they seek to keep their past audiences happy, create new listeners yet try to stay true to the basics of provoking growth through sharing thoughts and Eppiphanies. Whether it is the prediction of the new race of money mongers being manufactured around the globe (and laughed at between the lines, while feeling dread for all of us in the future) in BIG MONEY. Talking about the complex Social politics of Running againts the mill in the GRAND DESIGNS; Conferring with the world about the state of the human race with respect to nuclear bomb creation and the sense of no turning back that the Manhattan Project makes clear; you can see the poetry, philosophy and persuasion that are the true hallmark of these musicians musings. They kick it up a notch with the classic MARATHON about competition with ourselves and others and the sometimes dangerous underlying motives that our egos create to set ourselves and others up for failure instead of support. Just when you think they have said it all, they discuss the history that the human race seems to keep repeating by creating boundaries that are personal, political and National with TERRITORIES emphasizing that we still haven't learn anything because we are looking through the eyesglass in reverse. MIDDLETOWN DREAMS kind of brings the listener back to common ground talking about the one thing that every beating heart on this earth can relate to DREAMS! How they Inspire us to heights by rescuing us from the depths of despair that we can come up against while sailing through this life. EMOTION DETECTOR can be seen as a possible solution to how we might consider re-thinking how we relate to one another, begs us to be more open and not judging of others so that we can forge a world we actually might be able to better stomach. MYSTIC RHYTHMS is like the end of this great piece of Poetic Literature that persuades the listener to contemplate those things beyond this world and comprehension while suggesting how we can be more in touch with that in the present (both physical and metaphysical) if we consider the concepts of how shifting consciousnous is done in each culture throughout history and how perhaps when we have opportunity to cross such cultural boundaries and share our common heritage with respect to healing, spirituality, trance meditation etc we all become more in synch with one another creating a mystic rhythm that expands in ways the mind may not be ready to comprehend yet. SO IF YOU LIKE THE PENSATIVE PART OF RUSH THIS CD IS NOT TO BE MISSED!
"..but this was something more..."
I have to say this is my favorite rush album by far. I would give it much more stars if I could, but I can't (sigh). I think the best (besides the hits; "The Big Money", "Marathon", "Mystic Rhythms") would have to be "Manhatten Project", a very haunting song, and suprising "Emotion Dectector", which the clip on iTunes doesn't really show the best part of it. Trust me, if you like "Vital Signs" or "Force Ten", you'll really like this song. "Grand Designs" and "Territories" are great too. Now that Iv'e pretty much named every song on this album, I just say buy it, it's worth every dime (and penny) (>=
An overlooked and underappreciated masterpiece.
This album comprises some of the finest Rush songs made. This is the last album Rush made that I can just put on and let spin. "Power Windows" also has two of the best videos released by the band, "The Big Money" and "Mystic Rhythyms".
