making my fav list this year.
Very strong songwriting! I would put this record alongside early Kristofferson or even Neil Young. . but certainly more modern. Standout songs are 'Morphine Blues', 'Virginia', and 'Fragile Cage'. Three instrumentals seem to weave the record together. My only complaint is that it is short. More! More!

Unreal talent
Niel Brooks always seems to be in his element, no matter what he's playing. His songs are archetypal and unique at the same time. What I hear on Prarie Fire varies. Sometimes it sounds like the songs are slipping from the folds of something written long ago and never read. Sometimes I hear the soundtrack to a gorgeous film I've yet to find. These songs are intimate and immediate, but have a context all their own. You get to glimpse these characters from their side of the lens.
Listeners who like Prarie Fire should get a hold of "Nine Black Paintings" and "Static Sessions" -- Brooks' two previous records. You'll be glad you did.
