iTunes Review
Prairie Wind represents both the best and worst of Neil Young. With the help of faithful collaborators Ben Keith and Spooner Oldham, it’s his return to the smooth, country rock sound of Harvest and Harvest Moon. It’s a quiet, reflective record haunted by the death of his father and his own head-to-head with mortality. (Young suffered a brain aneurysm while making the album.) And while certain songs gently reflect these sobering truths (“Fallin’ Off the Face of the Earth,” in particular, is a stirring track featuring Young’s wife Pegi among the singers), others come across awkward and overly sentimental. “When God Made Me” suffocates under its own spiritual weight; “He Was the King” is an Elvis tribute that falls completely flat. Simplicity does find its rightful place on “The Painter,” a basic declaration of artistic intent, while “”It’s a Dream” has a hazy beauty at its core. As a full-on concept album, Prairie Wind doesn’t quite come together, but the best of its tracks deserve full attention.

Back To The Basics
A little late in purchasing this album, and truly sorry. After spotting him on "Late Night" singing, "Far From Home" I went bought "Prarie Wind" today. This is Neil Young's finest album. Out of my top five Young albums, this is easily #2. Young; like Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Warren Zevon before him; managed to grip his internal fears, desire and dreams while slowly interpreting his fate. Here he returns to the basics creating the classic Young sound by fusing folk, rock and country into somber tunes. Young presents an album about mortality and how life is created, destroyed and reborn through love, religion, family and society. If you had been disappointed by his last effort; disregard the regret; and purchase this immediately.
Still putting his soul into his music...
Neil Young has, over the years, given us many gifts of music. This album represents a soulful journey into speaking your heart with music. Neil Young seems as though he always has put himself on the line to do something different musically. Well done, well thought, touching home, as always.
Neil Continues to Rock the Free world
One word describes Neil's latest - Stellar! It is a wonderful combination of his soulful country rock, and interjections of experimental bluesy jazz and even a little gospel. There are some very wonderfully written songs that take Neil back to his younger days in Manitoba and throughout the Praries. Thanks for the great stuff.
