Album Review

It seems like with each successive release, DevilDriver keep turning up the dial of heaviness. And on their fourth studio album overall, 2009's Pray for Villains, the group continues plowing forward with this approach. Screams, growls, raging riffs, and impressively airtight drumming are all crucial ingredients to the DevilDriver metallic recipe. Produced by former Machine Head guitarist Logan Mader, Pray for Villains hits you like a ton of bricks from the get-go with the album-opening title track (and leadoff single) and never lets up, as evidenced by such brutal tracks as "Fate Stepped In" and "Forgiveness Is a Six Gun," among other dangerous ditties. Pray for Villains confirms once and for all that Dez Fafara has totally shed the nu-metal schtick of Coal Chamber for the 100 percent pure headbanging fury of DevilDriver. [A CD/DVD edition was also released.]

Decent

It's a pretty good album all in all. If you like DevilDriver then you will enjoy the album; but I do have a few negative comments. 1. The vocals are a bit over processed- this was an issue on the last album as well but its worse now. 2. Rather then getting heavier on this album (like they have done with each new release prier to this one) they became more melodic-now don't get me wrong I love melodic metal but I'd prefer if DevilDriver stayed with the thrashy-groovey style they had going before. I will say this though: The new album grows on you after a few listens.

pray for your ears

If you have not heard of this band or have heard of them and know what their music is capable of then you will not be disappointed by this album it shreds from top to bottom with amazing guitar and drums. you have to be an idiot not to enjoy these guys if you love metal. absolutely insane!!

Skullbashing Fantastic Fury

This has got to be the heaviest, fastest, most vengeful madness released since Slipknot released Iowa in 2001. I have heard Devildriver's other albums (but don't own them) but picked this one up the day it was released based solely on the strength of the title track. After about a dozen listens, I must say that it is, hands down, the best metal album I have heard thus far in 2009. The drumming is insane, the guitars are pummeling, the bass lines are complex, and the vocals are pure fury. The whole album is sheer speed and power built for working out, driving, or just about anything. The top tracks are Pray for Villians, Pure Sincerity, I've Been Sober and Resurrection Blvd. If you haven't heard this band before, now is the time. I can't say enough how truly awesome this is. (The bonus tracks aren't entirely necessary, but still worthy tracks. The Iron Maiden cover is surprisingly cool.)

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Following the dissolution of Marilyn Manson/Korn-aping, nu-metal also-rans Coal Chamber, vocalist Dez Fafara hooked up with guitarists Evans Pitts and Jeffrey Kendrick, bassist Jon Miller, and drummer John Boecklin to form DevilDriver — a rather more extreme band dedicated to the subsequent hardcore-meets-death metal trends. Signed to Roadrunner like Fafara's previous group, DevilDriver released their eponymous debut to mixed reviews in 2003, and then its even less appreciated follow-up, The...
