iTunes Review

Compiled by Zevon’s son Jordan from a stash of demo tapes discovered after Warren’s 2003 death, Preludes is an essential collection of insights into one of the more intriguing singer-songwriters who came of age in the late-70s. Though Zevon was well-connected within the Los Angeles musical community — counting Jackson Browne, Waddy Wachtel and the Eagles as dependable friends — and recorded much of his material with their expert contributions, his songs were darker and filled with greater emotional distress than the smooth arrangements let on. To hear such familiar Zevon fare as “Hasten Down the Wind” and “Carmelita” stripped down to solo piano or guitar with Zevon’s voice cracking in the vulnerable spots brings out these songs intimate context. The tracks featuring full band arrangements (“Werewolves of London,” “Poor Poor Pitiful Me,” “Desperados Under the Eaves,” “I Used to Ride So High”) have a funky, garage-band excitement — and some great asides from a rambling Zevon. And the previously unreleased material — “Empty Hearted Town,” “Steady Rain,” “Studebaker”” and “The Rosarita Beach Café” — is up to his own stringent standards. Allegedly, there’s more where this came from. Hopefully, this is just a taste of what’s to come.

Outtakes and alternate versions make for a true fan's beautiful gem

If you are a casual fan, this album isn't the idea way to introduce yourself to Zevon's genius. If you're a Zevon fanatic - and I'll plead guilty - you should know that the itunes version here totally omits the second CD that comes with the store-bought package, as well as the 42 page booklet with wonderful stories by many of his closest friends. While the first disc is a treat, the second disc largely consists of spoken interviews conducted during the "Life Will Kill Ya" recordings which hardcore Zevonites will find indispensable. As great as this CD is for me, it's hard to recommend the itunes version since it omits the second disc...but if you're strapped for cash and can't spring for the extra 8 bucks to get the real deal, you could do a lot worse than what's available here.

Preludes - Rare and Unreleased Recordings

For anyone who is true fan of Warren and his music, I find this release to be an interesting view into the untouched studio gems he was famous for. Carmelita is fantastic, Warren's voice shines. I would rate this as an exceptional listen for the person who considers themselves to be an avid listener. Perhaps not the best introduction though for anyone not familar with the other works of this legend.

enjoy every track

this is brilliant stuff. one wonders if he would have released them himself, but they have a raw quality that dig deep into your skin, even more than the versions weve heard. a sorely missed , amazing talent. even werewolves becomes listenable, the only weak song in the bunch. but buy the actual cd, for the packaging and rare photos.

One of the most acute and savagely satiric songwriters of his era, Warren Zevon was born in Chicago on January 24, 1947. His formative years were as colorful as the scenarios played out in his music: his father was a professional gambler, a lifestyle which forced the family to move frequently, and Zevon spent most of his formative years in California and Arizona. He learned to play piano, focusing primarily on classical material before a disintegrating home life led him into pop music, as well as...
