iTunes Review
Cut in 18 days as Robert Plant recovered from a serious car accident — he was forced to sing from a wheelchair — Presence is the most underappreciated of Led albums but nonetheless shows that even a rushed Zep could turn in convincingly soaring (“Achilles Last Stand”), thumping (“Nobody’s Fault But Mine”) and playful (“Royal Orleans”) stuff. Jimmy Page’s guitar solos, especially on the opening “Achilles,” are among his most urgent and driven, while Robert Plant appears more angst-ridden than he would until his solo days. Presence is ultimately proof that the most minor Led Zeppelin album could go head to head with many other bands’ most important ones.

Zeppelin's cruelly forgotten masterpiece
'Presence' remains Led Zeppelin's most misunderstood and under appreciated album. It is the underdog in Zeppelin's catalog and other than 'In Through the Out Door' it is the album that is considered the most mediocre. It lacks both the diversity and happy feel good vibe present in previous albums yet this is the album's main strength. The title alone reflects the sheer weight of sound that the band managed to capture on tape and there is a real sense of pain, hurt, loneliness, and occasional terror that haunts every song. Simply through the power of 'Achilles Last Stand' Presence would be a classic even if the remainder was filled with John Bonham having drunk conversations. A dour yet exhilarating track from start to finish featuring John Paul Jones' galloping eight string bass, Bonham's thunderous drumming, and Jimmy Page's greatest guitar orchestration on record the track never lets you wander off. 'For Your Life' allows the listener a breath after the brutal opener a simple yet merciless blues that is a "cry of mercy from the city of the damned". 'Royal Orleans' one of only two happy songs on the entire album is a hook filled joy that pokes fun at one of the band members escapades with a transvestite perfect in its 3 minute running time. Up next is the album's masterpiece an adaptation of Blind Willie Johnson's 'Nobody's Fault but Mine' that features Robert Plant's most lacerating vocal performance ever. When you hear him spitting out the lines you know its one from the heart and not just rock star posing. Like 'For Your Life' it is a simple construction yet utterly unrelenting in its intensity. All members play with maximum feeling none more than Plant who releases a cathartic harmonica solo when you're expecting a guitar. 'Candy Store Rock' is the album's only misfire and is mercifully kept at four minutes. 'Hots On For Nowhere' allows Plant to express his frustration at his bandmates but like Royal Orleans it is a fun workout even featuring a false ending. 'Tea For One' is the final blues and ends the album on a downbeat note. It features a moving vocal from Plant and an incendiary guitar solo from Page, its only fault being that it meanders for its closing minutes. Yes this album lacks acoustic ballads and rock anthems but it is superior to every Zeppelin album in terms of sheer sustained inspiration. This a band playing at its peak under extreme conditions when their very existence was threatened by Plant’s accident. Recorded in just eighteen days in the cold bitter winter of Munich it is an extraordinary achievement by the band that proved that even after eight years they could still produce songs of intense quality, poise, and impact. Perhaps because of its downbeat nature it is often rejected by fans but it is for this reason that I embrace it. This is Zep with their backs against the wall reduced from Gods of Valhalla to mere mortals. It is an absolutely essential piece of rock genius.
Led's most underrated album
Sad to say, I already have all the albums (CDs). This one has always been in the shadow of its predecessor, Physical Graffitti. Achilles Last Stand: So many different riffs, interludes, yet the band never loses pace, the soles are the most techincal ever seen from Jimmy and Bonhams beats are fantastic. 5 stars For your life: has a very intense riff starting around a quarter of the way through, so you probably wont hear it own the 30 second preview. 3 stars Royal Orleans: interesting cool and short. 3 stars Nobody's Fault But Mine: Very cool opening riff that comes around throughout the song, and a crazy harmonica solo. 4.5 stars Candy Store Rock: myeahh... its an alright elvis cover. 2.5 stars Hots On for Nowhere: Gets catchy, superb vocal work from Robert Tea for One: Long, slow, but really cool bluesy solos. An interesting repeated idea comes around every once and a while. Good way to conclude. 3 stars
Oh it's all good
Excuse me Achilles Last Stand is the only good song on this album. You need to listen to Noblody's Fault But Mine and relisten to Tea For One where Mr. Page gets to business. Don't just buy this album, buy the entire recording collection. No One, No One has or will be as good as these guys.
