Pretty Hate Machine...Nine INch Nails

I listened to this album like it was a religion when it first came out. I tore through three copies of the casette tape....that was all that was affordable back then. I still like this album because it has lyrics that are so transparent and so raw and so relatable...even if it is the 20 something year old me that is reminiscing. I still give it a thumbs up, for memories at the very very least....

LOVE this album

I listened to this tape and then CD over and over again in the 90's as a teen. The songs/lyrics are great. I still love this album.

A 15 year olds, thoughts on this classic album.

I bought the original version at my local cd store (i wanted to hear the original before the remastered) and even after hearing the remastered, i prefer the original. I dont know why, but i like the darker sounds of the older verssion.
Lets get to the short reviews...

Head Like A Hole - 9/10 The big single off this album is definetly none short of Amazing, but i wouldnt call it perfect. The live version is WAY BETTER.

Terrible Lie - 7/10 TERRIBLE LIE!!!!...awesome lyrics by Trent but the music is kinda borring

Down In It - 10/10 Perfect NIN song...Not kidding, but this song makes me expierience anger, pleasure, and all and all headbang. Dark lyrics+ bad@ss guitar and keyboard + RAIN RAIN GO AWAY = My Fave NIN Song

Sanctified - 7.5/10 (Listening) 9/10 (Playing) Bass and more dark lyrics = 7...but this song didnt blow me away like HLAH and DII...seriously though i learned to play bass line for this song and its way more fun playing than listening too

Something I Can Never Have - 9/10 Ever hear the Disturbed song "Darkness"? This feels like the inspiration for the song, idk why...but its so similar in lyrical tense (both are about different things but still). All in all, an Emos wet dream btw i'm not FREAKIN EMO!...ask my Homie Brad and he'd say "Dark knight is epic, and my holmes aint emo...hes just on crack".

Kinda I Want To 4/10 Trents worst voice on the album, but the electric sound keeps it at "below average".

Sin - 7/10 Its basically a more techno version of "Sanctified"....Still Very good though

Thats What I Get - 5/10 Average but weird song that should had been acapella

The only Time 5.5/10 Going back to the heavyness of the first half of the album, this is one that wont dissapoint, but may leave some bored cause it seems to go on longer than it does

Ringfinger - 6.5/10 The chorus is the only redeeming part of this song, but still not on par with the first 5 songs

Verdict:

Yeah its classic, but it hasnt held up. Im partial to techno rock, but a few song are way too borring.

Dan's Score: 7.4/10

Nine Inch Nails were the most popular industrial group ever and were largely responsible for bringing the music to a mass audience. It isn't really accurate to call NIN a group; the only official member is singer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Trent Reznor, who always remained solely responsible for NIN's musical direction (he was, however, supported in concert by a regular backing band). Unlike the vast majority of industrial artists, Reznor wrote melodic, traditionally structured songs where lyrics...
