iTunes Review

Jane Austen's class-conscious 1813 romantic novel has been a favorite subject for numerous screen adaptations, including a '90s miniseries and even a buoyant, more recent Bollywood send-up (Bride and Prejudice). For this 2005 version, director Joe Wright gave Italian composer Dario Marianelli the not inconsiderable task of conjuring a score that evoked the various classical compositions in vogue at the time of the story's early-19th century timeframe. The range that gambit requires encompasses everything from obvious homage ("A Postcard to Henry Purcell") and period dance conceits ("Another Dance," "Meryton Townhall") to the martial music of "The Militia Marches In." It may not have made for the most cohesive soundtrack, but its rich accomplishments — in particular the composer's sly evocations of Beethoven's piano sonatas via the romantic performances of soloist Jean-Yves Thibaudet and the English Chamber Orchestra — nonetheless earned Marianelli an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score.

Pride & Prejudice soundtrack

To enjoy a movie soundtrack, it is often necessary to have seen the film, and have associations to go with the music. The music doesn't always stand on it's own merit. However, the Pride & Prejudice soundtrack can be enjoyed whether or not you have seen the film. The music is alternately stirring, delicate, playful, thoughtful, and really a pleasure to listen to. I find myself repeating a track over and over, because it simply isn't long enough to absorb! A great listen, if you like a classical style, with a leaning toward the romantic. (By the way, I loved to movie, too.)

Great movie, great soundtrack...

I believe it is almost impossible to not mention the movie when mentioning a soundtrack, and in this case the movie has become, surely, my new favorite. "Pride & Prejudice" is one of my favorite books, ever, and this newest film is quite possibly the best version I have seen (possibly even better than the famed BBC 5-hour version, but if not it certainly equals it at the least). Thus, this soundtrack is a great reminder of the film and the most important and sweeping scenes contained therein. From the moment Elizabeth Bennett is standing on the precipice overlooking the Peak District of England in "Liz on Top of the World" to the beautiful moment that Mr. Darcy expresses his love (yet again) to Lizzie during "Your Hands are Cold" and "Mrs. Darcy" every majestic crescendo is a great reminder of this great film. I fully recommend both to any reader, particularly any reader fond of love stories and "Pride & Prejudice."

Lush and romantic

Like the candlelit, sunlit richly textured look of the film, this is a score of quite remarkable beauty. Richly accented with rolling flights of piano fancy, the music for this film really grabbed my ear when I saw the film and listening to it on its own did not dissapoint. Truly a lovely soundtrack for anyone who loves the sweep and romanticism of another era.
