iTunes Review
The Horrors pretty much exemplify the evolution of goth in the new millennium. Though the goth tag may retain its grip due only to Faris Badwan’s evocative voice — which actually sounds like a cave, if caves could sing — it’s hard to imagine the band’s ancestral influences (the Cramps, Joy Division, Birthday Party, etc.) fading away completely. Toning down the noisier, punkier elements of their debut Strange House, Primary Colours is a surprisingly ... lovely record: “I Only Think of You” has the gravitas of Stephin Merritt (of Magnetic Fields) at his most melancholy; the Krautrock-kissed “Sea Within a Sea” is atmospheric and lulling; the shoegaze storm underlying “Mirror’s Image” and the Joe Meek influenced “Who Can Say” is warmly familiar and hypnotic. The lush orchestration and Badwan’s vocals on “Three Decades” recalls the Psychedelic Furs, while “New Ice Age” feels like a PiL/Sonic Youth mash-up. These Brit boys boldly embrace the past — all the while writing good songs, an important point here — and their future looks bright.
Customer Reviews
One of the best albums of the decade
Never before have I experienced an album that has brought me utmost joy. There is nothing that sounds like this as of late. With this version of the album you get the b-sides "Whole New Way" and "You Could Never Tell". Both of which are excellent and sound just as exhuberant as the rest of the original album.....A must have for any music geek.....
They're baaaaaaack!
Although I found these guys in late 2009, I started listening to Strange House first. I must say....MAN HAVE THEY CHANGED! They may have lost a bit of their punky-grunge sound, but this new shoegaze-y type is just as good. I can still see some of Strange House in this. Can't wait for the new album! I LOVE THE HORRORS TO DEATH!!!
Brit-Alt Proper
Finally something out of the UK that DOESN'T either sound like a new wave Coldplay (i.e. The Editors, sorry not for me!!) or another garage band post-punk reincarnation mash-up from New York (everything else, these days...sigh) - THIS IS WHAT MAKES UK/BRIT POP/WHATEVER YOU WANNA CALL IT SO GREAT!!! Although there's plenty of post-punk here, some Shields, some spookiness - its just all of that that makes this work. While definitely borrowing, there's nothing to blush about here. Infectious melodies and waves of sounds lend itself to make a surprisingly non-hokey listening experience. There's the aforementioned Kevin Shields-lending tone in here, but surprisingly much of the early nineties Britain wave of sound that makes one think this was released in 1992 rather than 2009. On top of that Josh Hayward/Von Grimm/Third (whatever you wanna call him) looks like a vintage Jon Greenwood - for sure! While I think many might have passed on the first full effort, it would be a travesty to overlook this album. Great textures of sonic qualities and Faris Badwan's monotonic hymns with avalanching percussion will greet you, and you will love it. Find out what the UK, NME and what your brother has been raving about. Cannot wait for what they have up their sleeve for round three. Tracks to hang your hat on: "Sea Within a Sea," "Do You Remember," "Scarlet Fields," and "I Only Think of You" - sorry iTunes you are dead wrong on the latter track, its a gem.
